fewer than half — 46 percent — knew that electrons are smaller than atoms This is really disturbing, that was before high school for me, and it kept emerging over and over again in chemistry and physics classes. Are people getting that much dumber?

tbh, much of that report is disturbing, such as this
"87 percent of scientists believed that humans and other living things evolved naturally, compared with 32 percent of the general public"
sounds to me like your nation needs to improve science lessons significantly.

I think religion has to do with it, the bible is more important than any scientific studies to them. I know this because some guy at a FB forum called me idiot because I thought that adam and eve wasnt more than a story(which is) and he started saying that we coming from monkeys was very stupid and laughed like an idiot, another girl said there where the ones who are sons of god and the others are inferior and come from the monkeys, also, they said the big bang was so stupid because only god can organize something as perfect as the universe, many other things they said.
I think someone needs to do something.
