Forums - Nintendo - Dragon Quest IX Street Date Broken In Japan

"Japan’s legislatures were not slow to act, enforcing a now historic law that bans Dragon Quest from ever being released in Japan on a weekday. This law is still in effect today, as each Dragon Quest entry is met with millions still copping out of a day of work. "

DQ is a game to break the law. (Well it's not that illegal)

Its hardly a broken date given that its already Friday morning in Japan...

Super Mario 64 was much worse in the USA, the date was Sept 29, you could buy it on Sept 26.

And considering that was the bestselling game of the 5th gen, that certainly didn't hurt it.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

SE as always subestimated DQ, since the merger it has seemed square has complete control over everything and that means FF gets all the attention.

What are you trying to say?

that square took over of enix and the company is named square enix only because dragon quest is still alive, once it dies it will return to be square soft

^ I hope you don't believe that your self.

I know this is thread necromancy, but, uh.

That's some of the funniest post I've ever read, as it's so hilariously wrong, that I have to fix it. SO, CHILDREN, SIT DOWN AND LISTEN TO THE TALE OF WHY SQUEENIX IS WHAT IT IS TODAY!

See, long ago, Square did this dumb thing called The Spirits Within. Now, see, I liked the movie, but it lost the company money. Lots of it. And, also, at the time, Square was putting a lot of investment into FF11. So, uh. They were sort of... well, hosed. Things were looking bad for our beloved Square! And then Enix came in and /bought Square/. No, I'm not kidding. The merger was not initiated by Square. Nor did Square take over Enix. It wasn't a hostile takeover, no, but it was very much Enix buying Square.

Aaaaalso, Dragon Quest has, and always will, beat the everloving poo out of Final Fantasy in sales in Japan. Want to know what the generic term for video games is, in Japan? Sort of like how soccer moms here use 'My kid plays Nintendo'? DraQue. Dragon Quest. (Okay, that's not /entirely/ true, as video games are a /bit/ more understood over there, but it's very close.) Right.

Hopefully someone, maybe even the person I quoted, will read this and be educated.

I must ask, why were you reading a month-old thread to begin with?

why do you even need to fret with broken street date sales. even if they would be in week 0, can't you just hold them over to week 1? besides, are there really that many sales from broken street dates anyway?
