Forums - Sales - will wii sports live up to expectations

Im thinking that Wii Sports resort might not be the H/W boosting game that some are expecting. Early reports are saying that it dropped to about 150-160k in its second week in Japan. I think it might struggle to make 2m lifetime in japan. The original is currently at 3.58, id be very surprised if it tops that.

In the west it has no chance of topping wii sports unless Nintendo starts bundling it with the Wii.

Out of interest here's a list of some games on the Wii where the sequel paled in comparison to the originals sales:

Boom Blox 0.94m

Boom Blox Bash Party 0.07m

House of the Dead 2 & 3 The Return - 1.03m

House of the Dead Overkill - 0.31m

Excite Truck - 0.89m

Excite Bots - 0.04m

I could see Wii Sports Resort not living up to the high expectations people have for it. At one stage it was a first day purchase for me but thanks to WM+ being bundled with other games (i already have one from the Tiger Woods bundle) there seems to be little reason for people to add another tech demo to their Wii collections.

Didn't the new Boom blox come out like two weeks ago?

It has been proven already that it sells.....Why are you calling it a tech demo? Twelve mini games is a lot. It will sell great in the end. Doubt it will do what Wii Sports has though.

Thats my point, it wont do what wii sports did - move H/W which is what most people seem to be expecting

Tech demo might be a harsh phrase, but i feel its a piece of software which is designed to show off how great the WM+ is in much the same way Wii Sports showed off the original H/W.

Like you say its mini games, i dont want another collection on mini games. Id rather Nintendo made a new version of WaveRace instead of the power cruising mini game in this for example.

^
almost everywhere technically speaking h/w moved wii sports sales,
and resort will do just fine

^click the license to level it up! Please, and thanks in advance!

And what were those expectations?  Certainly not that it would outsell the greatest selling home console game of all time and certainly not that it would push Japanese hardware just the same.

Are we expecting it to be a 5 million seller?  Yes.  Will it be?  Most likely.  Are we expecting it to sell mostly to the crowd that already owns a Wii.  Yes.  So why suspect a major hardware boost?  The only hardware it's meant to push is Wii Motion Plus, not the console itself - much.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

The Advertisement campaign for WSR is on a totally different level... plus it's a Wii game and it has a hardware bundle, i think it'll do just fine

The Wii in Japan was still lower than every point last year with WSR's release. I don't think it could have possibly met expectations by anyones standards.

Tease.

@ squilliam - see the other post that I'm debating against you in for the reasons why your post is incorrect :P

Anyway, @ OP - WSR is trending above WS so far (ie on 2 weeks of sales :P) So I don't see how you claim it will sell much worse

Also, on the HotD thing, the first was priced at $30, the second is still at $50 and still selling decently each week.
