I imagine that the reaction to this story will evoke a myriad of reactions from people: some will likely scream in anger, and others sob quietly. Still others will bang their heads against their desks, and so on. Fans of the Resident Evil series have long wanted a new Wii title in the series-- not another "REmake" or rail shooter, but an honest-to-goodness traditional Resident Evil game that isn't just leftovers from last generation. And at a preview of the upcoming Wii title, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, video game magazine games™ asked Chief Producer Masachika Kawata if Resident Evil 5 might ever come to the Wii.
"Hypothetically speaking, the Resident Evil 4 engine would work perfectly for replicating the gameplay but we would never be able to recreate the graphical quality" Kawata told the magazine. "A gun shooting game like Darkside Chronicles makes much more sense for Wii so, in short, Resident Evil 5 Wii Edition isn't likely to happen."
However, it wasn't long before he seemed to have second thoughts: "Having said that, Cavia has surprised us with the quality of graphics in Darkside Chronicles, so it may actually be possible after all…"
And isn't that ultimately all that Wii-owning Resident Evil fans were asking for all along? After all, Capcom has already shown they have no problems stepping graphics down from the 360/PS3 level and reusing the RE4 engine when they made Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop.
Of course, if they made RE5, we could still hope that it would look closer to The Darkside Chronicles.
