Money.

-What about the fact that Sega still used CD's instead of DVD's?

-What about the fact that Sega was in the hole after mammoth pricing on the Saturn and then cutting this lifespan early to beat Sony to the punch?

-They died more because of those two things rather than the money. If money was the case.....Nintendo wouldn't be here after the asswhipping Sony layed upon it during the N64 and the Gamecube era.

Insane amounts of money.

Microsoft has had strong exclusives and great 3rd party support. Sega didn't have much of that for the Saturn and Dreamcast.

Edit: I don't think its just money. Making quality games helps too, look at Nintendo.

basically because they had so much money they could just buy what they want

The Xbox's first game was a revolutionary game for one of the largest genres in existence. Now, anyway. So, Halo would be my answer.

So your answer is money... MS moneyhatted Halo, it was originally going to be a Mac exclusive

Larger war chest, not as many stupid ad ons, easier to develop for etc. But really its money, Microsoft can take the heat, sega couldn't.

Also to add that Xbox LIVE revolutionized what SEGA tried to do :P

Years later when the internet was way more spread already. Nothing great.

Sega tried to do it too early perhaps? Sometime being too far ahead of the curve can be really costly.

Just like Sega, Nintendo couldn't afford to make the mistakes that Sega made. The difference is that Nintendo never made the mistakes that Sega made. Easy as that!

Sure, they made some other mistakes, but nothing as fatal as Sega's mistakes.

I LOVE ICELAND!

The early line up for Dreamcast was one of the best to ever grace a console, so it's not games that are the issue. Unless you are talking about the Saturn.
