Forums - General - So that movie "Gamer" looks pretty cool, right? [/sarcasm]

Why are you replying if you don't know what it's about? We have youtube and other sites. Just look up the trailers.

It was just a question,  being at work I cant jump to video sites to start viewing movies and trailers since my work blocks most of them.   I guess I dont have the luxury of being at home all day and surfing the internet and playing games.

Okay, given that, this is what I saw in the trailer.

In the future there is a game where death row inmates are somehow put under the control of video game players, who make them fight to the death. The show is a bloodsport, like a live action pseudo counterstrike (I guess), and the main character is trying to win enough matches to get free and back to his family (how much do you want to bet he's innocent).

So this does look like a reatread of death sport movies, with games added. The spiel I did in the OP was that if such a thing were offered for real, I would hope gamers would protest someone offering something that assumes gamers are as bloodthirsty as the media wants to make us look.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Ah, sounds like Death Race, which wasnt bad but I doubt this will be worth seeing.   And you are correct, I would hope no one would participate in anything like this, if it were real that is.

If that "did you read it all the way" was directed at me, yes I did read it all. But at the same time, I don't think the idea of the movie is specifically to say gaming is evil or anything. It's just an action flick with no real meaning behind it except to show Gerard Butler attempting to be a badass (which he normally does quite well but this movie is sketchy in that sense).

The thing is I wasn't ranting against the movie. My big deal was the hypothetical part.

The idea of gamers actually controlling/affecting real people in games has been around for a while in books such Ender's Game/Shadow and in TV shows (I just remembered Reboot).

Hey LtNK, did you ever read either of those Orson Scott Card books?

Not in that sense. It was just presented as a game, but the soldiers recieved orders and obeyed them.

Really?  I was always under the impression that the ships were in fact being directly controlled and manipulated.  Maybe I should reread them.

Looks like a rip off of Death Race mixed with crap and boringness.

I remember watching the trailer first on Xbox Live. Looks pretty sweet. I wouldn't mind such a virtual reality game like that, but I would like more interaction than just shooting and explosions (I'll get into this later in another thread).

ENDER'S GAME SPOILERS FOLLOW:

Nope, there were people in the ships. That's why Ender wasn't told- they didn't want him to know that thousands of human lives were in his hands, and they didn't want to stop him from making rash decisions to win the battle.
