Okay, given that, this is what I saw in the trailer.
In the future there is a game where death row inmates are somehow put under the control of video game players, who make them fight to the death. The show is a bloodsport, like a live action pseudo counterstrike (I guess), and the main character is trying to win enough matches to get free and back to his family (how much do you want to bet he's innocent).
So this does look like a reatread of death sport movies, with games added. The spiel I did in the OP was that if such a thing were offered for real, I would hope gamers would protest someone offering something that assumes gamers are as bloodthirsty as the media wants to make us look.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
