Not yet, Ive had an AMD X2 6000+ with a 4850 for 8-9 months now, so I hope it has at least another year left.

Actually there arent very graphics heavy PC games on the horizon, so it mite even last 2 years and still run the games on high settings.

I had the same problem with audio from a hdmi to dvi cable. I ended up having to run a spdif cable from the motherboard to the video card.

what is a Spdif cable ?? and how did you do it ??

interesting that I heard the same solution while searching online.

spdif cable is a small 2 pin cable for digital audio. One probably came with your video card.

Hdmi carries audio and video, so the spdif cable will output the audio from your motherboard to the video card. You will have to change to a digital output in the sound preferences once you get it hooked up.

here's a pick of my computer with the spdif cable.

the small white connector with the red  and black wires connecting to the video card on the right side of the pic is the spdif cable. on the left side of the pic you can see where it connects to the motherboard. The motherboard in the pic is a gigabyte, so the spdif output prongs should be in about the same place as yours.

Windows 7 only supports one audio device output at a time. So if you are running desktop speakers and digital audio, you will have to switch to whatever one you wish to use at that time in the audio preferences.

wow thanks. I got more than I could've asked for.

ok it's hard to find this cable here in Canada (did not come with my GPU) so is this what's your talking about ??

other question if I did this can I still use headsets ? I have no problem changing the audio default device from the windows menu but if it involves opening the case again and changing wires just to switch between audio from HDMI TV to headset it's going to be pain in the ass

Use the power of the cellz to solve the problem!

I don't know what the connector looks like on your video card. If it is like most other cards then that cable won't work.
you will need one with a smaller head on one side.

here's a link to a pic of the cable

you won't have to open the box to use the headphones. Just change the audio device in the preferences before you start playing any sound.

thanks a lot JWS I really appreciate the help. It's going to be tough finding the cable here but I'll try.
