Actually, the majority of awards went to LBP and Fallout 3. There were several threads on this.
In fact, I haven't seen a single major reviewer giving it to GTA4.

I think VGC gave it the just reward of Disappointment of the year, because GTA is.

Really, just like how Super Mario Galaxy won game of the year in 2007? Oh please... Dunno001: Oh, calling Metal Gear Solid 4 a movie. How original. |
umm, smg didnt win goty in 07...it might have won from some website, but the spike's vga gave it to bioshock :S

I think so. And I think it deserved its 10s as much as Ocarina did the ones it received.

Duh, it lost against Bioshock in 2007.
Metal Gear Solid should've won GOTY 2008, GTA winning it was just politics.

Well, we shouldn't. Mountain Dew doesn't get an award.
Wiki is pretty helpful for easy questions.
"Towards the end of 2007, Super Mario Galaxy was named Game of the Year by IGN, GameSpot, Nintendo Power, GameTrailers, Edge and Yahoo! Games. On February 7, 2008, the game received the "Adventure Game of the Year" award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences at the Interactive Achievement Awards.[54] The game placed third in Official Nintendo Magazine's "100 greatest Nintendo games of all time".[55] On March 10, 2009, the game won the "Game of the Year" award at the 5th British Academy Video Games Awards.[56]"
If Spike holds the "oscars" of videogames, our medium truly is pathetic.
