21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...David Jaffe (God of War)

By Dan Hsu in twisted metalsonyps3god of wardavid jaffe21 Random Qs on

We have questions. But they're not necessarily easy questions to answer.

They have answers. But do they want to give them up?

Welcome to "21 Random Qs: Getting to Know..." -- a biweekly series of interviews where the norm ("What's it like working on your game? And just how awesome is your game, by the way?") is out of the question. We have way tougher things to ask.

And just who are "they"? Game developers, executives, professional players, journalists...or just plain nice guys in the industry.

David Jaffe does not fall into the latter category. The game director, designer, and co-president of development studio Eat Sleep Play (you may better know him as the creative mind behind God of War and Twisted Metal) is one outspoken SOB.

He's not afraid to tell you that you suck -- he's even got the balls to call out the press on stuff he doesn't agree with. We know. We've been on the receiving end back in our EGM days.

Jaffe has nothing new to promote right now (Sony's not letting him talk about his upcoming PS3 projects yet), but that's OK, because "21 Random Qs" was not designed to be a promotional vehicle for anyone. Instead, we want to get to know Jaffe as a normal human being.

Who's his favorite superhero? What's the best prank he's ever pulled? And -- for you God of War fans out there -- has he ever been in a real-life three way?

Let's get to know...David Jaffe.

1.  Who's your favorite comic-book superhero?

David Jaffe: Spiderman.

2.  Favorite childhood toy?

Jaffe: Paddington Bear -- and my youngest kid is now sleeping with the same one I used to sleep with.

3.  Dream car?

Jaffe: General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard but with a USA flag on the top.

4. Political lean?

Jaffe: Crazy liberal. There is some libertarian in me *and* a touch of socialism as well. I'm all messed up -- I don't fit in a box. Most parties have something I relate to, with the exception of the Bush era, neo con Republicans. Can't we all just get along? Except for Hannity and Limbaugh. Fuck those guys.

5. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Jaffe: Dante's Inferno from EA. Oh wait, I did create that.

6. Favorite sports team?

Jaffe: San Diego Padres.

7. All-time favorite book and author?

Jaffe: A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle...or Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. And I imagine Card, who I read is a devout Mormon, would want to kick the living poo out of Tolle, who is a new age guru...but they are both idols of mine.

8. Favorite magazine you still subscribe to?

Jaffe: Entertainment Weekly. It's like getting a little pop culture convention in the mail every week. Oh, and Mad Magazine.

9. All-time favorite movie?

Jaffe: Raiders of the Lost Ark. It changed my life -- awakened my creative spirit in a huge way.

10. Current favorite TV show?

Jaffe: Real Time With Bill Maher, Brothers and Sisters.

11. Best prank you ever pulled?

Jaffe: I crank called Steven Spielberg at Amblin Entertainment and told his assistant I wanted to pitch a movie about a talking pickle. We were in a Sony conference room, and I did the whole thing on speaker, and we were all dying laughing. Not sure how far up the food chain I got in terms of getting to the man himself, but we had fun.

12. Website you check daily, other than your own?

Jaffe: Neogaf.com.

13. The most interesting thing you've ever named?

Jaffe: Myself. About 10 years ago I decided I hated being called Dave and started asking to be called David. Dave sounds like the fat, jolly, always benign best friend role that used to go to James Belushi (and now goes to someone like Jonas Hill). Got tired of being the friend -- wanted to be the leading man of my own life.

14. Tell us something interesting from your past:

Jaffe: I once called my childhood phone number -- about five years ago -- just to see what would happen. The phone picked up -- no one said hello -- and on the other end I heard two little kids playing and calling each other Philip (my brother's name) and David (me, duh). Did I call the past? I still wonder. And no, you can't take the idea and use it for a movie or book. It's mine! Mine I tell you! Although it does kind of sound like that movie with Dennis Quaid....

15. Favorite all-time videogame? Excluding any you've worked on...

Jaffe: The Mask of the Sun or GoldenEye...or Ico...or Deus Ex. FUCK YOU! It's too hard to decide! I HATE YOU!!!

16. Favorite all-time gaming platform?

Jaffe: SNES, baby! Zombies Ate My Neighbors? Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures? A Link to the Fucking Past?!? Totally SNES. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for the PS2 and the Atari 2600 as well....

17. What pieces of media or entertainment  did you make your team soak up to research for God of War?

Jaffe: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Edith Hamilton's Mythology, Ray Harryhausen flicks from the '80s and '70s, Flash Gordon soundtrack by Queen.

18. Thing that you hate most about the games industry?

Jaffe: Games are too expensive to make, take too long to make, and are too expensive for the consumer.

19. Developer or studio you really admire?

Jaffe: Hideo Kojima, thatgamecompany, Blizzard, Insomniac Games, Warren Spector. Hell, there are so many.

20. Have you ever been in a three-way in real life?

Jaffe: Yes. It's not what it's cracked up to be. Distracting and hard to focus.

21. Favorite mythological figure?

Jaffe: Old Myths: Pegasus, Perseus, Jason, Zeus. New Myths: Indiana Jones, Spiderman, Hulk.

21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...Cliff Bleszinski (Gears of War 2)

By Dan Hsu in UnrealGears of War 2Epic GamesCliff Bleszinski21 Random Qs on

We just discovered that Gears of War 2 and Unreal Designer Cliff Bleszinski is twice the geek we are, which is pretty incredible because we're pretty damn geeky.

How did we find out? He told us, in the latest round of 21 Random Qs. We're not referring to his love for Iron Man (see No. 1) or George Jetson's car (see No. 3). We're referring to...well, see for yourself (see No. 15).

1. Who's your favorite comic-book superhero?

Cliff Bleszinski: Iron Man. Because I love flawed heroes, and he's such a lush and a womanizer.

2. Favorite childhood toy?

Bleszinski: Transformers. Specifically, Autobots. Because Decepticons are dicks.

Bleszinski: Goose and tonic.

Bleszinski: Hiding 100 electronic Psyduck motion-activated noise-making Pokémon figures around a neurotic artist's office.

15. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself:

16. Favorite all-time gaming platform?

Bleszinski: SNES.

17. What pieces of media or entertainment did you make your team soak up to research for Gears of War?

19. Favorite Unreal weapon?

Bleszinski: Goo Gun!

20. Best shooter, excluding any you've worked on?

Bleszinski: Quake.

21. You're down but not out. Who comes and rescues you?

Bleszinski: My brother Tyler.

21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...Ken Levine (BioShock)

By Dan Hsu in Ken LevineBioShock2K Boston21 Random Qs on

We're beginning to wonder if developer 2K Boston modeled BioShock bad guy Frank Fontaine after the game's Creative Director, Ken Levine.

It's not that Levine's a master manipulator of us common folk (uh...we don't think so, anyways). He's just a no-good cheat. Just look at some of his responses and non-responses to our 21 Random Qs interview below! (See #3, 17, 18, 19, and 21.)

And don't miss the vague hint as to what he's working on next....

1. Who is your favorite comic-book superhero? Outside of anyone from Freedom Force, that is.

Ken Levine: When you're getting beat up in the 7th grade every day and you find Spider-Man, it changes your life.

2. Favorite water-based activity?

Levine: Drinking.

3. If you could have dinner with any one person in the world, who would it be?

Levine: Coen Brothers. They're two people, so I cheated.

4. Favorite childhood toy?

Levine: Atari 2600, natch.

5. Earliest gaming memory?

Levine: Playing Avalon Hill board games with my brother: PanzerBlitz, Starship Troopers, etc.

6. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Levine: Magic the Gathering. Amazing design and brilliant business concept in one.

7. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself:

Levine: Speech impediment until the 7th grade. Couldn't say my "S" sounds.

8. Favorite sports team?

Levine: 1973 Mets.

9. Favorite magazine you still subscribe to?

Levine: Amazing Spider-Man.

10. Current favorite TV show?

Levine: Mad Men.

11. Political lean?

Levine: Disappointed. Except for gay marriage -- that's been going well. Congrats Pat and Mark!

12. What pieces of media or entertainment did you make your team soak up to research for BioShock?

Levine: Very partial list: The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, Miller's Crossing, New York architecture, Fight Club, Django Reinhardt, The Manchurian Candidate...

13. Developer or studio you really admire?

Levine: Brian Reynolds, amongst a million others.

14. Website you visit every day?

Levine: Quarter to Three.

15. Favorite all-time gaming platform?

Levine: PC.

16. Best videogame of all time? Excluding any you've worked on...

Levine: Civilization.

17. Favorite setting and era you've researched for a game?

Levine: Can't say, doing it now!

18. Who's more irrational: Game publishers or fanboys?

Levine: Pubs. No, fanboys! Wait, no, pubs!

19. What one piece of modern technology would you bring with you to your new, sealed-off-from-the-world underwater home?

Levine: Computer with Internet connection. Is that cheating? Screw it.

20. All-time favorite singer or band?

Levine: John Lennon.

21. If you can only have one BioShock plasmid power in real life, which would it be?

Levine: Most of them wouldn't be much use around the house, unless your house was really, really violent.

21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...Todd Howard (Fallout 3)

By Dan Hsu in Todd HowardOblivionFallout 3Bethesda21 Random Qs on

Compared to outlandish ones like Final Fantasy or Xenosaga, Bethesda's RPGs are grounded in reality...relatively speaking. Vampirism, magic, mutants, and mini-nuke launchers aside, you can pretty much relate to the people and worlds in Oblivion and Fallout 3. Strangely enough, they're kinda normal.

Maybe that's because Todd Howard is kinda normal himself. Bethesda Game Studios' game director and executive producer is a big (make that huge) Bruce Springsteen fan. He watches Friday Night Lights. And he thinks he can become Batman someday. He's an everyday guy who just happens to make epic games for a living. Epic games that feel "normal," that is.

He's our latest subject in our 21 Random Qs interview, so let's get to know...Todd Howard.

1. What is your favorite end-of-the-world movie?

Todd Howard: 12 Monkeys.

2. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Howard: The iPhone. Or the iTimeMachine, because the iPhone is clearly from the future.

3. Favorite sports team?

Howard: Notre Dame Football.

4. Favorite comic-book superhero?

Howard: Batman. I like the idea that if I had enough money, time, and vengeance, I could become him.

5. Favorite childhood toy?

Howard: The Landspeeder from Star Wars.

6. Best prank you've ever pulled?

Howard: I had one of our voice actors, who does a perfect William Shatner, call someone who knew Shatner and curse him out.

7. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself.

Howard: I liked hacking into and pirating computer games while in college. One of my favorites was Bethesda's Terminator 2029. So I drove to their offices and asked for a job.

8. All-time favorite book and author?

Howard: Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams.

9. Would you rather live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland or a medieval world full of monsters?

Howard: Medieval world. The food is better and the woman dress all fancy.

10. Current favorite TV show?

Howard: Friday Night Lights. Why aren't you watching this show?

11. Political lean?

Howard: I hang to the left.

12. What pieces of media or entertainment did you make your team soak up to research for Fallout 3?

Howard: Fallout 1, The Road, Children of Men, Mad Max, and Dr. Strangelove.

13. Developer or studio you really admire?

Howard: Infinity Ward. No one can touch their pure execution of an idea.

14. Website you visit every day?

Howard: Touch Arcade. I'm addicted to my iPhone and get a game for it every few days.

15. Favorite all-time gaming platform?

Howard: It's fancy to say something old and cool like my Colecovision that I still have, but I have to say the Xbox 360 edges it out.

16. Best videogame of all time? Excluding any you've worked on...

Howard: Grand Theft Auto 3. If you had asked "computer game," I would have said Ultima 7.

17. The most interesting thing you've ever named?

Howard: My dog, Indiana.

18. If you could have dinner with any one person in the world, who would it be?

Howard: Barack Obama. We would take turns telling politically incorrect jokes -- and then hug.

19. You wake up and discovered you've slept through World War III, and the world is pretty much wiped out. What's the first thing that you do? Besides crying.

Howard: Activate my army of Super Soldier Machines and declare "Australia will be ours!!"

20. All-time favorite singer or band?

Howard: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Just saw them for my 26th time last week.

21. Did you save Megaton?

Howard: Yes. The rewards are much better, and I usually play the good guy.

21 Random Qs: Getting to Know...Ted Price (Resistance, Ratchet & Clank)

By Dan Hsu in ZeldavalveTed PriceSuper MetroidSucker PunchResistanceRatchet & Clank Future: A Crack in TimeRatchet & ClankNESNaughty DogInsomniac GamesBioWare21 Random Qs on

If we had done a 21 Random Qs interview with the EGM staff back in the day, our answers would've pretty much looked the same as Ted Price's. The CEO and Founder of Insomniac Games (developers of Resistance and Ratchet & Clank) likes the same movies we do, watches the same TV show we'd watch during deadline dinners, and most importantly, thinks the same game deserves the "best of all time" title as we did.

We might as well call this piece "The Price is Right." (It's cool...you can all groan now. We hear ya.)

Currently, Price is working on the upcoming Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time for the PS3 in the executive producer role ("Which means that I pretend to be useful while a lot of very talented folks here bust their asses to make our best game yet," he says). That means he had plenty of free time to fulfill our very last-minute request for this interview.

So let's get to know...Ted Price.

1. What is your favorite movie of all time?

Ted Price: Star Wars. I remember the day I saw it in the theatre more vividly than any other day in my life. Is that weird? Maybe it's because I was a very impressionable nine-year old. Time Bandits and The Terminator came close though.

2. Best "mankind vs. aliens" movie?

Price: Aliens, hands down.

3. If you could have dinner with any one person in the world, who would it be?

Price: Steven Hawking.

4. Favorite gaming platform of all time?

Price: NES. Ruined my grades in college. Damn you Zelda!

5. Best PC or videogame of all time? Excluding any you've worked on...

Price: Super Metroid.

6. Favorite Resistance weapon?

Price: Marksman.

7. Favorite Ratchet and Clank weapon?

Price: Bouncer.

8. All-time favorite book and author?

Price: Ender's Game is my favorite book. But my new favorite author is Joe Abercrombie.

9. Favorite current TV show?

Price: Family Guy.

10. Favorite band or singer?

Price: Mastodon.

11. Website you visit every day?

Price: OGame.

12. Developer or studio you really admire?

Price: Man, there are way, way too many great studios to list. Valve, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, BioWare...I could go on for pages.

13. Best prank you've ever pulled?

Price: Best? My pranks were always lame. For example when I was around 11, I turned off all of the water in the house. I thought it was funny. My father called a plumber because he thought we had a broken pipe. And $200 later, I got chewed out. See? Lame.

14. Favorite childhood toy?

Price: The remote control plane I built. And crashed. And rebuilt. And crashed.

15. Favorite comic-book superhero?

Price: The Maxx.

16. Favorite sports team?

Price: The Blue Dolphins, my daughter's soccer team.

17. One thing you most wish you had invented or created?

Price: Google.

18. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself.

Price: I used to live in Maui and worked in a windsurfing shop, renting and repairing windsurfers. It was rad.

19. Would you rather have a pet lombax who's heavily armed with dangerous weapons or a robot sidekick who's heavily armed with a mouth?

Price: I'll take the robot. Lower insurance premiums.

20. Who would you rather deal with in real life, the Chimera or all the combined enemies of Ratchet and Clank?

Price: Are you kidding? The Chimera eat people for Pete's sake! Or worse, they turn you into a Grim.

21. What do you do when you have trouble sleeping?

Price: Read software manuals.

Mmm fun questions, nice to see that most devs of the HD twins still have their roots at Nintendo. Also quite shocking... they all lean toward the left!
