Forums - Gaming - Analysis: X360 underachieving and why it won't get a price-cut in 2009

I was under the impression the price cut was a major success for the 360. It stalled the PS3's advancement late last year and the gap between the 360 and PS3 has never been larger. The cut has also put the ball in Sony's court, and I would highly doubt the rumors of a "slim PS3" or major price cut would be around if the 360 were still at its earlier price point.

On a side note, your bullying of other users who rightly discern that your analysis rests on a large assumption about SKU representation, among other things, is not very classy. Instead of running to the moderators to silence other opinions, how about participating in rational dialogue?

Would you call anything that guy was posting "rational dialogue" ? I'm open to the discussion, but please let's stay focused on the issue. I thought it was perfectly clear I was talking about 360 sales after the price-cut compared to last year and my views on what's to come in the near future.

Go ahead.  God those who report are sad little people... anyway... it wasnt trolling. Dont ask for opinion if you only want agreement.

How, exactly, are those who report others 'sad little people'? When there is an annoyance on the forums, the quicker we're rid of it, the better. To hell with the ridiculous unwritten rule of not tattling. Only when people are actively looking for things to tattle on or when those who do so become overzealous that it should be frowned upon. Otherwise, I certainly don't see the issue with it.

I would understand if you had said "those who threaten to report" (which would fit what I had written above and what The had unjustifiably done, as you weren't trolling).

^why don't you show the first half (2008) of that chart? The 360 is selling at mass-market price this year, mass-market SALES should be expected, am I right?

Beating a PS3 priced a lot more all over the world by around 400K this year is what you call a big achievement and mass-market sales? Why isn't the 360 selling closer to the Wii? say 50K less per week than the Wii or something?

Your chart only shows the 360 was failing and the price-cut saved it from complete disaster. Thanks for the illustration, it helps my point quite a lot.

Now look at this graph and tell me that the price cut wasnt effective and the 360 is underachieving...

Proof right there for the success.

Whats interesting is, with the PS3 pricecut/slim (whatever one they are going to do)... and FF13 in Japan. PS3 could easily do the same as 360 did, and close down the gap a LOT in the Christmas months.

Are you blind, or dumb?

The chart tracks back to 06.

The chart does show the first half of 2008.

My mistake, I thought it was a 2008 to 2009 chart.

That makes that chart besides the point of my discussion. As I said, the price cut saved the 360, I'm not denying that. All I'm saying the 360 is not selling what is expected of a leading machine priced under $200.

I think the pricecut did wonders for the 360. The point is that without a pricecut for this year the PS3 is pretty much guaranteed to outsell the 360 for 09.

I don't think the 360 is underachieving. I also don't think its overachieving either.

It's selling more than Xbox, has gained a small presence in Japan, and has expanded the brand well, particularly in US. It's also got a great library and sold many titles well.

I think the simple truth is, given the price of the lowest SKU, that the brand just doesn't have the acceptance or demand to gain WW sales like PS1/PS2.

The Wii for example still outsells the 360 WW with a higher base entry point while the PS3 only trails it a little WW despite a much higher entry point. At the price, and with its library, if the brand was good enough then the 360 should be selling more IMHO.

This is probably down to basic brand recognition, being seen as a shooter only console (erroneously) by many, RROD, minimal traction in Japan, the economy and many other effects.

However, I doubt MS are anything other than happy with progress so far. I think the LTD should be higher given the expenditure and effort on exclusives, etc. but perhaps I was expecting too much initially.

PS3 is of course a clear step down, at least so far, from where Sony was with PS1/PS2. Hopefully lessons were learnt. Given how close the WW sales are, Sony may close the gap yet, but MS will be fighting them the whole way (as is quite right in a competitive market).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Sales went up since september 4th, the biggest spike corresponding to the holiday season starting around black friday. This year the sales are up from last year, but not what anyone would expect for a mass-market product, they settled too low and too close to what the PS3 is doing at higher prices all around the globe. The 360 is on pace to sell around 11 million for 2009, is that all you expected for a console in it's 4th year selling at under $200? Geez, talk about ideal price points. Is this as high as the 360 can get? Do you expect higher sales for 2010? really? It's going down from this point as I see it, and no further price-cut can change that.
