Forums - Gaming - At current rate, PS3 may sell less than GameCube

This is for the generation we are refrencing, not lifetme. It has a longer shelf life than the gamecube Sony has assured us of that :)

Im shure lifetime sales will be greater but for this generation will the ps3 sale more then the gamecube.

Hey Snesboy, show Leo-J some respect. He's the coolest PS3 owning kid in the U.S.

I think Leo-J is still sort of burnt out from his huge breakdown and he's tired of ass-plugged Nintendo fanboys saying unlikely things as some sort of clouded troll attempt at almost every opportunity and getting away with it.

I mean, the PS3 couldn't logically continue its current rate, what about Christmas boosts? Plus, there will be boosts, even if small, from the acclaimed PS3 games, such as Final Fantasy 13.

Anyways, I have mad respect for Leo-J and I won't let you talk down to him.

The Gamecube also had boosts from Christmas and acclaimed games.

Personally I would say it will pass the GC due to more scope for price cuts and a stronger brandname but nothing is guaranteed in this world.

Calling people ass-plugged fanboys is probably going to get you a warning at least =

I mean calling out snesboy as a fanboy, go ahead, calling him ass-plugged? There is a line, and you crossed it.

Depends on what "ass-plugged" means. Are you implying that I only play Nintendo systems?

If that be the case, then you are dead wrong. What would I do without my Star Wars Battlefront and Halo?

How would I play my precious Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid and Katamari Damacy and Area 51(though that is also on Xbox) without a PS2?

If I only had a GameCube last generation, I would have gone insane due to the lack of good games in the last two years of the system's life. The span between Resident Evil 4 and Twilight Princess on Cube was forever. What was I supposed to play on the pathetic "lunch-box"? Fire Emblem: PoR? umm sure but I like my strategy games portable. Battalion Wars? I didn't even like Advance Wars and now its an RTS with brain-dead A.I.? No thanks. Odama? No, there is just something weird about medieval pinball.

Those were the only Cube games worth mentioning that came out during that long gap between RE4 and Zelda TP.

@leo-j

I know where you are coming from. I honestly do. Last generation, I had to deal with all this bull**** too about why the GameCube didn't have any good games and how its graphics sucked (they still blew away PS2, but since that was the best-selling system, nobody cared about fact) and lastly its lack of online play (ehem, Hacks to play LAN games (Mario Kart, Kirby Air Ride, 1080 Avalanche) online and Phantasy Star Online).

But do I truly hate PS3? No. Why? Because it still hasn't reached its potential and when it does, that is when I will make my opinion on it.

Do you expect Sony to say 'Hai guys, were going to screw you and stop supporting the PS3 in a few years, have fun ok?'

??? wow did you get all that from my prev post.

ahh in that context no, its all about lies and deception dont say anything till the last minute, deny deny deny overhype

i was refering to sony just keeps repeating that there system is future proof, and most people i would think would take this as hey i dont have to own this now i can get a 360 becouse it is NOW and latter get a ps3 as it will not e tapped till then. Becouse gaming is now who wants to w8 to play games.

i just think saying future proofed is not the best term.

I think it's pretty clear that the PS3 will sell more than the Gamecube, but it's current sales trend is pretty worrisome. The question now isn't so much how those numbers will climb, but whether Sony has any control over it. The Gamecube would have had more games and sold considerably better if it wasn't for the strong competition, and with the 360 doing quite well and the Wii being a gaming phenomenon, the PS3 has some damn tough competition to deal with.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I'm a bit confused about the OP's point. It was either that the PS3 would sell worse than the Gamecube WW (which is what most are debating) or that it will sell worse than Gamecube in the US. The argument itself is somewhat invalid, you can't look at first year PS3 vs GCN sales in the US and then say the PS3 will do likewise over 5 years worldwide. Seeing as the story is from Gamepro (booo) I will blame them for the faulty logic and not the OP.

So anyways, on to the two points. I would be shocked if the PS3 did as badly as the Gamecube WW for 2 basic reasons. 1) Nintendo only fell from 50 million to 35 million going from their second to third system. While Sony has much more room to fall I doubt it'll be 80%+. 2) The PS3 sells more evenly around the world than the GCN did (65% of Gamecubes were sold in NA compared with 44% of PS3's).

That last line though indicates one reason why I think it's possible, though not necessarily likely, that the PS3 will be outsold by the Gamecube in NA. It is possible that say the PS3 sells 40million WW but less than a third are in NA. Essentially in that scenario the Wii takes the PS2's casual, budget, and niche gamers while the 360 takes the more hardcore gamers leaving the PS3 with only the Sony fanboys. Due to the 360's struggles outside of NA it is likely the PS3 will sell much better due to what I suspect is a larger Sony fanbase and by holding on to the hardcore Euro/Japanese gamers.

So essentially it comes down to the PS3 will outsell the Gamecube WW but narrowing it down to NA is debatable, though I do think that it is very likely the PS3 will outsell the Gamecube in NA (the Xbox is more 50/50).

umm. no. The problem here is that the GC was 1/3 the price of the PS3. At launch the GC was already priced in the mass market price point, while the PS3 is much, much higher than that.

If they were priced the same, the PS3 would be doing a lot better and probably blowing 360's socks off.

Also, looking at this graph, you can see that in WW terms both the 360 as well as the PS3 are both trending higher than GC.

no the charts are still screwed up, do it region by region.  For some reason when you put GC on all, it doesn't show others even though there is data for others now.  i noticed this before, ioi you should probably take a look at that, probably a quick fix.

Anyway, if you go region by region you will see that 360 is trending a bit higher in america than GC, but PS3 is actually trending a little bit lower than GC.

In others 360 is tracking just slightly higher than GC and PS3, GC and PS3 are almost exactly the same at this point in their lifecycle in others.  The difference for 360 is that it is trending higher in its 2nd year than GC did in its second year, obviously PS3 doesn't have a second year yet.

In Japan GC is trending a bit higher than PS3, and obviously way higher than 360.

Overall GC is tracking higher in Japan and America, and the same in Europe with PS3.

at this point here are the numbers

Japan

GC 1.5m

PS3 1.2m

360 - 163k

NA

GC 2.426m

PS3 2.072m

360 2.996

Others

ps3 1.5m

GC 1.5m

360 - 1.63m

in conclusion GC is actually trending higher, and as some people have pointed out the ps3 is way more expensive, and for the others numbers the ps3 hasn't had the luxury of the holiday season in others at this point while GC had.
