I think what they mean that people cannot define Rare's identity and role in the industry...

For example, when people talk FPS Bungie and Infinity Ward's name comes up as the bench mark. When you talk JRPG, Square Enix... WRPG, Bioware... Stealth is Kojima Productions... Hard core action games Itagaki when he was with Team Ninja... Racing, Polyphony Digital and Codemasters... etc..

Rare is not associated with genres but rather their games. Everyone knows what games they create, not many people understand what they have been the benchmark for in the industry.

They'll always be remembered for their awesome N64 games where they helped keep Nintendo afloat that gen. They have fallen off the map a bit in recent years.

Saying that Rare as a company is unknown is undeniably false in my mind, but what they could mean is that their development team as it is now is relatively unknown and when most people think of the name rare they think of the old glory days and not the current iteration. It would make sense if he means this and wishes to supplant the old rare in fame.

Well, people only care about them because of what they did on N64, nothing at all for their recent games.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

People know who they used to be, but most of those people left when Microsoft bought the company

I agree they need to release Banjo 4 or Killer Instinct 3.

I played lots of their games in the SNES and N64: Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark...

They should have stayed with Nintendo, they made pretty damn good games when working for them.

Play my LittleBigPlanet level: Mystic Runner. Thanks!

Oh, and one of the companies they formed post M$ was Free Radical, and we all know what happened to that....
