Forums - Microsoft - Rare Claims That Nobody Knows Who The Company Is

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696997/Rare-Claims-That-Nobody-Knows-Who-The-Company-Is.html

Earlier in the month I wrote about Peter Molyneux wanting to put Rare back on the map (in a positive light) as part of his responsibilities as creative director of Microsoft Games Studios Europe. Considering Rare's previous accomplishments, I thought his comments were a little on the pretentious side, but it seems people from Rare are agreeable to Molyneux's mission. In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Rare head of animation Louise Ridgeway said:

"He comes up regularly and it's great to see someone like Pete here. It gives us a little bit of a face because no-one knows who we are!"

I'm a bit shocked by these comments. Certainly longtime gamers know and love Rare for its excellent work on Nintendo consoles. Some gamers know Rare as a company that Microsoft purchased for $375 million and, so far, hasn't lived up to the price tag. But to say that nobody knows who the company is sounds a bit ridiculous to me. Maybe it's a case of kissing up to the new boss, but I'm certain that a great deal of gamers are aware of Rare.

Just to give myself a reality check (The Miz style), do you guys and gals know who Rare is? What do you remember the company for? Maybe Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye 007? Or do you think of Rare as the company that served up Grabbed by the Ghoulies to a world that didn't deserve it?

Who?

Wait... I think I know who they are...

Didnt they used to make good games?

Saying that Rare as a company is unknown is undeniably false in my mind, but what they could mean is that their development team as it is now is relatively unknown and when most people think of the name rare they think of the old glory days and not the current iteration. It would make sense if he means this and wishes to supplant the old rare in fame.

But war... war never changes

We know Rare as a company, but they don't seem to have a "face" for their company that people know, maybe that's what they mean? Either way, since being picked up by Microsoft they haven't been a front runner in quality title development in the way they were in the N64 days.

Consoles Owned: Atari 2600, NES, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, N64, Gamecube, Wii, XBOX360

I love Rare! They gave me my first N64 game... KILLER INSTINCT!!! I hope if they release KI3, they use Natal with it for 360!! :)

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

They were well known when they were good... what have they done lately... hmm the New Xbox Experience stuff?... funny how they and Nintendo think alike with the Miis and Avatars.... Did they do the newer Perfect Dark on the 360? Why isn't that being pushed more?

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.
