$850 to break even, anyway they've just about broken even now anyway, or very close to it

So the Walter Mitty of VGChartz would have paid 1000 euros!! Am I surprised? Nope.

As a Sony stockholder at least its good to know some of his money eventually will end up back in my pocket.

I believe Sony themselves claimed that the consumer was getting such a great deal since they should be selling it for $800. Also, the hardware price breakdowns backed this up fairly well off the start.

Also, this plan is essentially a credit line so now Sony has all the overhead of managing billing people. That would make things cost a lot more, so add another $100 per system. If you thought $600 was too much off the start, $900 would be way to much.

I would easily have paid 1000 Euro for a PS3.

Regarding me personally, I'm sure they are well beyond the break-even point.

That is probably true for all of us on this site... even with my second PS3, I have 8 1st party games + 14 others, I am sure that will give Sony enough money (and that is not counting PSN games or GT 5 P)

For some reason I don't think you own enough Sony stock to be of 1/millionth the substance with regard to this compared to the euro I gave to a bum today standing outside the supermarket.

But whatever makes you happy...

So essentially you combined Microsoft's Gold fees with Sega's failed Dreamcast payment options. Yeah, that wouldn't have failed at all.

Do remember also, while Microsoft charges quite a bit for Gold, they also deliver with a superior service. For Sony to justify an internet fee, they would have had to do more than simply play catchup on 360 features after 6-12 months. They would have to be on the ball constantly offering great new things the same way MS does. So not all of that extra income can simply go towards making profit. Some of it needs to go back into what you're asking customers to pay for.

@MikeB

Well I'm glad you are charitable to people, that is nice. But anyone saying a PS3 is worth 1000 Euro ($1402 USD) is just trying to bait folks, as its ridiculous on its face. And what does it matter how many shares of Sony I own, or if you have more money to toss to bums than I have to spend on Sony stock exactly? Obviously it doesn't, except you think its some effective put-down apparently.

They should have hired Billy Mayes.

People in the past paid more than that just to play Doom with decent quality.

Thousands of PS3s have been resold for over 2000 dollars around launch at websites such as Ebay. So, my comment (which is true for me) does not seem extreme at all.

At 1000 Euro, the profit margin wouldn't even be that much on the hardware. Taking into account additional costs next to component/manufacturing costs, such as taxes, shipping, retailer share, support, marketing, etc.

If you want good proft margins maybe invest in panty shields, they cost about 0,02 to 0,2 cents to produce and are being sold for many many times this amount.

And what does it matter how many shares of Sony I own

I was just pointing out the obvious. Even if I paid a million euro for a PS3, have you calculated how much of this "profit" ends up in your pocket even if owning a million euros worth of shares?

It was just a response to your own comment. How many times have you now repeated you own Sony stock here on VGChartz and at other places like AW? Why should people care reading these different thread topics?
