So essentially you combined Microsoft's Gold fees with Sega's failed Dreamcast payment options. Yeah, that wouldn't have failed at all.
Do remember also, while Microsoft charges quite a bit for Gold, they also deliver with a superior service. For Sony to justify an internet fee, they would have had to do more than simply play catchup on 360 features after 6-12 months. They would have to be on the ball constantly offering great new things the same way MS does. So not all of that extra income can simply go towards making profit. Some of it needs to go back into what you're asking customers to pay for.
