Sir, yes sir! The hating will continue as planned, sir!

I don't know how I didn't think of this last time, easily the WORST story of any RPG, let alone a high profile one: Final Fantasy VIII. What an overambitious, clumsy, convoluted, turgid mess Square cooked up for that game's story.
Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.
Wait, you didn't like the first SeeD mission? And the part with the two Gardens fighting? And the Lunatic Pandora part? And...
Wow, I have to replay FF VIII because I only have good memories of that game. Maybe I was too young to understand much of the dialogue at the time?
Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

It hurts to admit that that story was as bad as it was. I chose to interpret it in a compelling way for a very long time.
FFVIII is definitely the worst Final Fantasy in terms of narrative.

Thank god! I mean, when the story of a game makes you like the characters after a while, you know it's not bad writing at all. I think people who hated the game are just too rational and never really liked Star Trek in the first place. It's not a fantasy game so much, and it has good sci-fi elements in it. That's instant win in my book. The character interaction was fine, I mean you know what you have to know about every character in the important cutscenes, then you can do the sidequests to learn more about the world you're visiting and stuff. It's typical JRPG stuff, but it's good. At first, I hated Faize because I thought he was "kind of girly" (yeah, believe it or not. I have nothing against those people though), but then you grow to like his character more and more. I have to admit Sarah shouldn't have been included in the game. She's the only one I didn't care about even after completing the game (it seems like they didn't really emphatize on her character so much).
On-topic: I have nothing to contribute to this thread! I mean, I can't really choose one. My main problems I have with RPGs are mostly gameplay-wise. So, I question myself, did anyone play a bad RPG? I mean a REALLY bad one? Oh wait, scratch that: Add Oblivion to that list. You want a plain world and a game that lasts 4 hours and then you're done with nothing interesting to do but get achievements? That's the game for ya! |
I admit the characters do grow on you, but I didn't even mention them in my critique. They are about as cliche as can be.

When you play a game, do you even realize they are cliched? I don't, I just watch the cutscene and then read what the characters are talking about. Then, later on, I go on forums and people come up with so many excuses to hate on a game, it makes me wonder if they enjoy gaming or they just like criticizing about games...
Recently, The Conduit is said to be generic... But c'mon, who seriously cares? If the generic stuff is done well, then I say why not! I know FPSs focus on gameplay, but my point with story in RPGs (which should be the main focus) also makes sense here. In other words: it doesn't have to be revolutionary all the time!

Final Fantasy 2?
