Forums - PC - Help with buying a TV for my office for computer and games

So my crappy old TV in my office is pretty much done for.  The purple in the lower left and green in the upper right has been slowly getting bigger and bigger and I'm thinking it's finally time to lose that TV.

I'm looking at under 30" LCD TV's from $250-350, what should I get?

Keep these things in mind:

  • I would like 1080p, though it isn't required  and don't even know if it's needed.  I will be fairly close to the TV since it isn't a large area
  • I MUST be able to play my classic gaming systems on it (NES, SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, N64).
  • I would like it to be able to be hooked up to my laptop and computer.

I think 32 inches is the smallest size for 1080p. I've been doing a lot of research on LCD tv(s) myself.

I'm not a fanboy, I just try to tip the balance in favor of logic and common sense.

Amazon has a 24" and 26", just no idea how good they are and if they have the inputs I need.

Also, here's the office just so you know how close I'll likely be to the TV (I'm doing mass cleaning at the moment so it's a bit messy >_>):

I'll either be sitting in that desk chair or the comfy chair on the side (whoops, that you can't see in that picture).

I think most of the good quality models are going to be just a tad bit out of the price range you specified. Are you super committed to purchasing a product within that range?

I wouldnt reccomend a 1080p tv for a room of that size. Its only noticible from a certain distance and a 32 inch would be ppushing a room of that size to the limits. I dont even think any games support 1080p if so they are the minority and your gaming expierience wont be affected by 720p/1080i.

Well technically you could use it for your computer monitor and TV. But 1080p is not necessary on TVs below 50". Infact i dont even think its available in TVs less than 32" and certainly not at your price point.

Most TVs have atleast 1 set of composite connectors (for your SNES, n64 ETC) and you can buy an adapter at any electronic store that will give you more composite inputs.

Basically you need/want
1 VGA/DVI connection (for your PC)
2. HDMI (for your xbox/ps3/bluray player)
3. Component for anything else
4. Composite (your old consoles)

Hope this helps. Message me if you need more info im pretty knowledgable about TVs and home audio setup.

Long Live SHIO!

1080p isn't at all required, I jut thought it would be cool to finally have something that can do it. :-p

So if that's the case, 720p will be perfectly fine as long as I can easily hook up my older stuff and it doesn't auto stretch the screen.

What kind of output do you have on your comp DVI or VGA? How many HDMI inputs do you need? How many component inputs do you need? How many composite inputs do you need?

Past Avatar picture!!!

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

Interesting, you're office has the same carpet/paint as ours....

Coincidence?

EDIT: What model is that laptop? Very similar to one in our house, too.

I was planning on buying this until I got my Vizio. I am still planning on buying it for my desktop, though - and maybe one for my son's 360 too.

I have done some research - not sure if this is what you are looking for, Twest.

EDIT: I don't think it has the inputs you need for your older systems.
