Forums - Sony - Will Sony ever make money off of PS3 hardware sales?

Eventually a profit will be made per console.

However the PS3 will never turn a lifetime profit on Hardware for Sony.

Currently 22 mil sold at 100USD loss per unit = 2.2 billion USD loss.

Lets say they reduce costs to a level of 250 USD and sell at 300 USD.

They would need to sell 44 million consoles more just to break even.

they can do that

they wont need to, they will have to rely on software sales which i believe they had to do last gen with the ps2.

haha, I would be amazed if they ever did. It's not like the wii, Sony know they have had to rely on high attach rates and peripheral sales since day one. To be honest lot's of products work like such as mobile phones and it often turns out to be very profitable.

I'm afraid I don't know much about predicted figures though to give an estimation.

Sony will make money from the console starting sometime
in 2010. by then blu-ray players will be cheaper to make

I have a question on this topic.

Is the production costs for the hardware the same throughout all regions?

I beleive they are all made in China, like everything else in this world, but the loss is different with different shipping costs, local taxes, local prices and of course exchange rates

Ah, I see. 'Cus over here (sweden) they still sell the PS3 (80gb) for 549$ - 699$ .. So I think they collect a major profit on us fools :D

Per average unit? yes eventually, perhaps by the end of this year if there is no price cut.... or late 2010 if there is a price cut this year.
(average unit meaning taking into account higher prices in certain PAL regions and such)

Overall profit from PS3 business... nope not a chance

PS2 hardware was profitable by mid 2003 I believe... roughly equivalent to if the PS3 started making hardware profit about now.

Except the PS division lost a lot more than $2.2 billion even including PS2 and PSP.... so the PS3 business lost a lot more than that.
