Forums - Sony - New PS3 exclusive by Housemarque on the way

“We’re currently busy trying to outdo ourselves with our next PSN exclusive game that’s in development at the moment,” wrote Petteri Putkonen, a developer at Housemarque, the development house behind the game. “We’d love to tell you more about it but will have to wait a little bit longer before we can reveal any details. At the moment, all we can say is we’re confident it’ll be worth your wait.”

Super Stardust HD still is my favourite PSN title to date and IMO looks simply gorgeous in 1080p.

Some past developer quotes on technical details:

"We are able to get over 10,000 active objects with physics and collisions and over 75,000 particles simulated and drawn @60fps. That said, we were unable to use all the available processing power from Cell for this game, so for the next game there are still plenty of reserves left"

Solo Pack update

"We probably draw about twice the number of objects compared to the original game. We are pretty close to maxing out the RSX, but in our next game we will still push the chip more. Currently we do not use SPUs to pre-process the geometry for RSX — that will make a major difference. I estimate that we can further boost the graphics performance by 50%."

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Cool! but I will not be able to enjoy and play this.

Housemarque's roots

Like many great game companies (for example DMA Design's Lemmings series, Team17's Worms, Blue Byte's Settlers series, etc), their Roots lie with the Amiga platform.

Housemarque is a fusion of two past Scandinavian game companies, Bloodhouse and Terramarque.

Bloodhouse's original Stardust running on the lowend entry level Amiga 500 (based on the OCS chipset from 1985):

Terramarque's Elfmania for the Amiga 500:

Bloodhouse's Super Stardust HD for the Amiga 1200 (slightly upgraded 1992 chipset technology providing more colors), the version for the Amiga CD32 games console provided some extra cinematics and CD audio:

The main reason why many PC game developers (including Demoscene coders and free internet distributed PD software) started out on the Amiga was because PCs, despite requiring harddrives for PC games and lots more memory, they weren't good for multi-media / gaming at all (they also sucked at multi-tasking, etc, but that's another story):

Nice. SuperStardust HD is a fantastic game. Hopefully their next game will be equally as entertaining.

Great news.

Nice Amiga plug MikeB

But this game does sound technically awesome.
and this part almost blew my mind:
"We probably draw about twice the number of objects compared to the original game. We are pretty close to maxing out the RSX, but in our next game we will still push the chip more.
