Forums - Nintendo - RPGamer reviews Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor - 4.0/5 (Great)

Forget the title, now we have a more important review! Gamespot gave it 9.0!!!

This fantastic hybrid role-playing game will pull you in with its thrilling story and keep you coming back for more.

The Good

  • Unique, strategic battle system is fun and entertaining
  • Intriguing story with plenty of mystery and style
  • Limited in-game time causes suspense and makes decisions meaningful
  • Many plot branches with multiple endings
  • Tons of character customization.

The Bad

  • Too many places to go with absolutely nothing to do.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is a thoroughly enjoyable role-playing game with a ton of atmosphere and style. By streamlining many of the series' trademark features and making them more accessible, Atlus has crafted a gameplay experience that longtime fans and relative newcomers alike can enjoy; by weaving multiple subplots into the overall narrative that can't all be explored in a single play-through, they've left plenty to do on subsequent replays. If you're looking for a riveting portable adventure, then look no further: Devil Survivor will take over your life and leave you begging for more.
Can't wait to play this!

It's no secret that I hate RPGamer as a site and I find their reviews horrible, but since the game comes out today and there's a lack of reviews for it they'll have to do

OVERALL

+ Tons of dialogue options that matter
+ Evolved tactical RPG gameplay
+ Demon fusion is very user friendly
- Music and visuals are so-so
- End challenge encourages grinding
- Some dialogue seems superfluous

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor has a lot going for it. Fans of tactical RPGs will enjoy the game's solid and original combat, which will also appeal to those that have grown tired of playing the same old thing. Even those RPGamers who are generally turned off by tactical RPGs might find this new hybrid combat system enough to offset the things that normally turn them off from the subgenre. Lovers of the SMT series will enjoy the branching storylines and tons of choices that are tossed at them throughout the game, even if the overall plot is fairly straightforward. The power to save the world is in your hands if you choose to take it, but if you're too scared to try, you can always turn tail and run. The choice is yours. I survived once and am excited about doing it again.

In all it's a great score (not counting the site it comes from), I can't wait to play it

So an 80? Not bad.

Do want this game :P

I think they are not crazy about JRPGs... Good score though.

Yeah. A RPG site that hates good RPGs, it's quite surprising, but that's RPGamer for you

Another review here. 3.5/5, not as high, but still decent

Plan on getting it somewhere down the line. I only wish it came with some sort of bonus like Knights in the Nightmare.

360 Games Now Playing   360 Games unopened:  Resonance of Fate  Last 360 Game I Beat: Resident Evil 5

DS Games Now Playing: Dragon Quest VI  DS Games unopened Knights in the Nightmare, Etrian Odyssey III, Okamiden, Dragon Quest IX Last DS Game I beat: Radiant Historia

Wii Games Now Playing  Super Mario Galaxy 2, Arc Rise Fantasia  Wii  Games unopened  Little King's Story, Sonic Colors, Silent Hill Shattered Memories Last Wii Game I beat: Sin & Punishment 2

Gamespot gave Devil Survivor a 9 which caught me off guard. Gamepro on the other hand gave it a 3.5 (surprise surprise...). I've never actually played a Shin Megami Tensei title so i may give this a shot, it's doing well so far on GameRankings.

How technical is your game?

I know, it's excellent news. Updated the OP, didn't want to create a new thread. Third AAA Atlus title in three years (Persona 3, Persona 4 and now this)

Pretty nice. I'll get it in a month or so. Need money.

I just got a phone call from GameStop a few minutes ago. My copy will arrive this morning :). The game has been getting some good scores.

RPGFan gave it an 8.5 - http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Shin_Megami_Tensei_Devil_Survivor/index.html
