Forums - Sony - PS3's lack of mass pirated games a negative factor?

Don't know if this is legal or not. Just to show you the stats of piracy. This is from same torrent site.                                        Seeders    Leechers

sure, what you guys say is true.

but how come the 360 attach rate is higher than the ps3?

I think piracy does improve game sales as well. It's a difficult idea ot think about, but for example:

I have been more and more inclined recently to buy a wii due to its ability to play downloaded games. That being said, there are many games that I would like to play online like MK that I would be forced to buy in order to experience to my satisfaction.
Having the console would force me to buy an extra controller and Motion+ and those games, that I never would have bought if I didn't have the system.

The PS3 isn't profitable. This wouldn't help at all. Actually, it would make things worse. Also, given the choice between a real game, and a pirated game that is 1/10 the price, many people would choose the pirated game.

Hmm in Poland you have around same number of PS3 & X360 consoles but most companies agree (not publically) that they make more on PS3 games.

So no piracy doesn't help other than building userbase for next gen consoles.

Most 360 owners don't even know that you can pirate a 360 game. I didn't even know that until now.

I agree with you bugrimmar, except that piracy is not a massive issue on the 360. (not as big as you think)

Aside from the people that don't know about it (like S.T.A.G.E) you also have to consider that deters people:

- Potential to be banned from xbox live. There are always a healthy supply of xbox live banned 360's on ebay.

- RROD. If you've got a modded console (voided warranty), you're basically screwed if RROD happens. (I know somebody who specifically hasn't done it yet just because they are worried about this).

So piracy isn't as big of an issue on the 360 as the PS2, DS or PSP. Piracy won't explode on the 360 until RROD is truly gone. Also, MS does a good job at ensuring most games are XBL compatible. So in particular in this day and age, if you pirate, you'll only be pirating a 6-12 hour single player experience.

Plus, the stereotype of 360 owners (male, 16-30 etc) is actually quite true in most cases and they tend to play alot of games (yearly sports games anyone), so that'd explain why the attach rate is much higher (if we assume piracy is not as substantial).

But yeah, Lack of piracy is actually hurting the PS3 sales wise imo, but it certainly isn't hurting the industry though (and by extension, the developers sony has under it's thumb).

I remember hearing that if the 360 got pirated, Microsoft would perma-ban people from Xbox Live. So it guess it's true, eh?

MS ban their console's ID but they can buy new Xbox.
