Forums - General - The officially unofficial Wimbledon 2009 thread

(In case you don't know, Wimbledon is a Tennis tournament)

This year's Wimbledon is looking to be pretty interesting. Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the tournament, and gave the reason that his knees are injured. If Roger (Edit: Roger is Roger Federer) wins, he'll become the world #1 again.

Last year, Roger didn't lose one single set on his way to the final. He then lost in the longest Wimbledon match ever, against Nadal. Federer definitely isn't as good (compared to his opponents) as he was last year, so that happening again is rather doubtful.

Seeing as Nadal isn't playing, Juan Martin Del Potro (#5) fills his spot. This means that (by seeding) the most likely semi-finals would be Del Potro-Murray and Djokovic - Federer. After seeing this year's Roland Garros, though, that's far from guaranteed. The ATP website claims that either Djokovic or Murray winning is more realistic than Federer winning (that doesn't mean that each of them have a higher probability, but that the two combined do).

What do you think will happen in Wimbledon 2009?

Murray does seem to beat Federer a fair bit, with a 6-2 in head to head. However, all of Murray's victories are on hardcort.

Personally, I doubt Murray is going to make the finals. He seems to play worse under pressure, and while he has won a fair bit of tournaments, his grand-slam records aren't all that impressive (well, he did reach the US open final in 2008).

Federer wins and makes tennis history with his 15th Grand Slam title!

I want to see a dark horse win it this year. I'm looking at you A-Rod.

I really don't want to see Federer win it to be honest.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

I really want Federer to win. In my eyes he is the best tennis player ever and a 15th Grand Slam and a 6th Wimbledon victory will confirm this to everyone else.

All the better if he kicks Murray's arse in the final.

I obviously root for Del Potro since he's my compatriot. A Del Potro-Federer final would be great

I agree. I'm really starting to like Del Potro. He does, despite his appearance, appear to be quite a clever tennis player. He uses the opponenet's weaknesses pretty well. He also comes off with quite a good attitude.

Del Potro's opponents aren't all that easy though (the opponents I consider to be the most likely)

Del Potro

Clement
Hewitt
Tursunov
Stepanek/Ferrer
Roddick
Murray
Federer/Djokovic

Hewitt could be a test early on, and Roddick has been in two Wimbledon finals.

Federer

Lu
Garcia-Lopez
Kohlschreiber
Söderling/Lopez
Tsonga/Verdasco
Djokovic
Del Potro/Murray

Roger seems to have a good control on Søderling. Tsonga and Verdasco are good players, but neither is suited for grass play. All in all, a fairly easy way to the semi-finals.

Djokovic

Bennetau
Greul
Fish
Robredo/Scheuttler
Cilic/Blake/Haas
Federer
Del Potro/Murray

The easiest way to the semi-finals. He never meets anyone higher seeded than 11th, and that's Cilic. He should have no problems making the semis.

Murray

Kendrick
Gulbis
Troicki
Wawrinka/Safin
Simon/Gonzales
Del Potro
Federer/Djokovic

The perhaps hardest way to the semis. Both Wawrinka and Safin could make dangerous opponents, as could Simon/Gonzales.

Murray and Del Potro are going to have a far harder fight to the semis than Djokovic/Federer.

As for the points (from ATP 1000 series and Grand Slams) for this calendar year only, it's something ala.

Nadal: ~ 5900
Federer: ~ 5400
Djokovic: ~ 2800
Murray: ~ 2700
Del Potro: ~ 2200

@Pineapple: Why do you still list Nadal in your list of potential opponents when you said in your OP that he's not playing? Did he change his mind?
