As I said in another thread, this seems less like bluffing as it does like playing a game of chicken ...

If this was a discussion behind closed doors Sony could make a token offer that would allow Activision-Blizzard to back down without losing any face, and Sony would retain the ability to time their price-cut as they saw fit. With it being such a public argument, any offer Sony does make to get Activision to back down will have to be made to EA, Ubisoft and THQ (at least) which makes it difficult for Sony to make that offer; and unless Bobby Kotick can come out as a "Winner" in this situation he will (probably) be forced to follow through with his threat.

Essentially, Sony is in a position where they have to choose between losing hundreds of Millons of dollars apeasing third party publishers, losing hundreds of millions of dollars on a price reduction for their console, or losing third party publishers' support; at a time when they don't have the money available to lose, and when they can't afford to lose third party support without hurting the viability of their console.

Now, while people may think the loss of Activision isn't a big deal, third party publishers have a herd mentality and they want to release their games on a platform where other major publishers are releasing big games; while this may hurt their ability to stand out in the crowd, it is easier to sell a game on a platform where their is high consumer interest than on a platform where few people look for games (due to lack of releases). A loss of support from one major publisher tends to translate into a loss of support from other publishers, which starts a deadly cycle for a platform.

Is the guy a complete fucking idiot? Everyone and their mothers knows about the incoming PS3 price cut already. How is it playing chicken? It's an obvious bluff.

Was that the price cut that was incomming at GDC or the price cut that was incomming at E3?

You have to consider the possibility that Bobby Kotick was meeting with Sony and Sony informed him that there would be no price reduction in their fiscal year (ending March 31st 2010) and he has taken this stance as a way to force Sony's hand. Call me an idiot if you want, but most console manufacturers telegraph a lot of their strategy to major third party publishers long in advance of doing anything; and if Sony was planning a price reduction in the near future (before Christmas) I would expect that Activision Blizzard would not be making statements like this.

Why would Sony cut the price now during the slowest months? That makes no sense. And Sony CEO confirmed a price reduction already. I don't see your point

Can I get a link to that confirmation, or are you just talking out of your ass?

If you're the CEO of Activision Blizzard, EA, THQ or Ubisoft and you ask Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft just about anything about their strategy for their consoles over the next 12 to 18 months you're probably going to get an honest answer. If Activision-Blizzard's CEO doesn't believe Sony has plans to reduce the price of a console it is highly likely that Sony doesn't have plans to reduce the price of a console.

HappySquirrel is right, as this is a serious matter. Sony relies too much on its third-party developers, and as he said with a domino effect, we can only expect the other major third-party developers to make similiar "threats" some time soon, if not a bit later; this includes threats from Square-Enix, THQ, EA, etc.

Oh, and another thing, JEDE3, don't degrade anyone on here. HappySquirrel knows what he's talking about, so it's really a dumb move to call him an effing idiot, plus when he's been on the forum longer than you and DID NOT degrade you (with a name) when he quoted you.

Go look it up. After the FY financials at a presser. One question "Is there a price cut comming" Answer "I cant talk about that" Question "How do you plan to make your targetted ps3 shipment" Answer "Youre just going to have to assume what our price stragety will be" - that's confirming price will be a factor in reaching their goal. And I know for a damn fact increasing it wont do them any good. and I know for a fact keeping it the same wont do them good... so what other option can there be for a price stragety that will increase demand... lets think about thaqt

When did I call him a fucking idiot?

I think you're reading way too much into that quote ...

He's essentially re-iterating that he will not tell you what the pricing strategy for the PS3 is. A CEO of a large company would not broadcast a price cut when it would cost him hundreds of millions of dollars being that it (essentially) convinces people to not buy a PS3 today because they will be noticeably cheaper soon.

I'll bet on a price cut before November and I'll bet that this guys shit talk wont be the reason. There is no possible way they'll make 13 million without one. They didn't make it last year and that was comming off a price cut late in the year. They know this

@HappySqurriel - SONY forcast a 30% increase in PS3 YoY. If SONY is not planning on a PS3 price drop then they better have a PS3 slim or a huge console seller coming out within the next few months since without either PS3 sales will be down YoY not up.

As for activision - what games would be lose? CoD would still be released on PS3 (or investors would rebel after a ~30% sales drop for the series), Guitar Hero will still be released on PS3, or again the decline would piss off investors. What other games does Activision make that PS3 owners would miss?(note that stopping support sometime in 2010 would mean your looking at games being released in 2011 not being on PS3... Activision won't cancel ports that are mostly done/ already paid for)

Ps3 slim and a couple of console movers with a Wii bundled in if they arent willing to drop the price.

Activision leaving could have a Domino effect. They are the biggest 3rd party publisher aren't they?

You know what they say......cut off the head, and the body is useless. Destroy the leader, and the crew collapses.

Activision-Blizzard.

But Blizzard doesn't do console games. I can only think of 2 things activision even makes, cod and guitar hero.

Check out my game about moles ^

Tonyhawk as well

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.
