The Conduit is something that HVS has been working on from the ground up, and utilizes a proprietary engine they developed in-house soley for the purpose of getting as much as they can out of the Wii's hardware.
It has nothing to do with the licensed games they churned out previously on tight schedules and tiight budgets, and now that they've been able to prove themselves, you'll notice that their new projects like Gladiator and The Grinder are even more technically impressive than The Conduit, and it doesn't look like they are going back to churning out licensed shovelware anytime soon.
BTW, HVS has made some pretty good original games over the years like Hunter: The Reckoning, which featured 4-player co-op survival horror years before Left 4 Dead was even conceived. LEGO Racers was also a pretty good Mario Kart clone back on the N64.
