Sorry, but you failed at the first sentence. "Most" gamers were not raised on Sony systems, myself included. (Atari holds that honor for me, and there're at least 30 million more in the Nintendo days.) But when did I give up on Sony? It was way back, during the PS1 days. When games like FF7 started throwing in all these movies instead of game, it started to die. Ironically enough, it also didn't take too long for my first PS1 to follow suit and "die." Thus, the PS1 became the first system I had to replace, and the second one died while still under warranty. The death of the second one is where I gave up. I leeched off of friends' PS2s for the games I wanted to play, and still do not own one myself to this day. (Though I imagine with my attach rate of infinte, Sony would love more customers like me...) I want reliability in a system, and Sony systems just don't do that for me.
