Forums - Nintendo - BioWare Intrigued by Wii Development

Speaking to IndustryGamers as part of a larger, wide-ranging interview, BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk briefly touched upon the idea of broadening their audience. BioWare's games have been epic in scope and we asked the duo if their role-playing games would be a good fit for the Nintendo Wii audience.

Muzyka responded, "I think the question we'd ask is, 'What is the Wii audience looking for, and what would we want to deliver that has emotionally powerful narrative?' And that probably wouldn't be exactly the same as everything else we do; we did a DS game and that was already very different from what we've done before, and the PC-only SKUs we did years ago were very different than the ones we've done for console... They're all different from one another. If we did a Wii game I think we'd approach it with the target audience in mind first and the vision of delivering an emotionally powerful narrative and go back to our basics in terms of some of the pillars of gameplay we'd like to bring to bear – exploration, progression, customization, conflict, story, narrative, and characters. How do we adapt that to the platform? That's how we'd approach it. The interface design on the Wii is very different from the other platforms, and that's really an opportunity because you can actually tell different kinds of stories and convey a different type of narrative. In the end the players are all human regardless of platform and they all want to feel something powerful and engaging. As a developer, you just need to really adapt and customize depending on the platform."

We further pushed him on the subject and asked if we might see a Wii game from BioWare soon. He continued, "We'd be intrigued by the idea of developing on Wii but we have nothing to announce right now. We do have some unannounced projects that we're not ready to talk about yet, and they are different from some things we've done in the past... Our goal, really long-term, is to broaden our base and continue to differentiate and have diversity of choice on different platforms, because we know there are different audiences on platforms like mobile and Wii, and different geographic markets and distribution and business models.  It's exciting, but you can't do all things at one time."

Our guess is we'll see something sooner rather than later from BioWare on the Wii. With an installed base of more than 50 million, the Wii's just too huge to ignore, and considering that EA owns BioWare, we think it's even more likely that BioWare will adhere to the publisher's multiplatform stance and deliver something for Wii in the near future.

I'm really want to see what they could do...

Former something....

I enjoyed the Sonic RPG from BioWare on the DS but it could have been a lot better.

That said I want a cool new RPG with an interesting combat scheme that uses Wii Motion Plus from BioWare - I would purchase that even with shitty reviews just for the new experience.

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

Baldur's Gate III? For Wii? Pleeeeease?

Meh. Call me when they announce something. Plenty of devs announce that they're interested or that the wii has potential......that's fine. But I can't play their potential.

I'm kinda torn on the idea of BioWare at this point. Their A-team is clearly excellent, but they obviously don't want them touching Wii development, and if it was their B (or C) team that did Sonic Chronicles, then their games can really suck from a production values perspective (as Sonic Chronicles did. The core gameplay was tight in chronicles, but that was about it. Those cutscenes were bogus, the music fell well below what they promised, and the story was a nightmare, in what should have been a slam-dunk of Sonic fan-dom.)

If it's their lower ranked teams working on the Wii, then i would be wary

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Good point. I was unable to finish Sonic Chronicles. I got about 5 hours into it and just could not play it anymore

Hmm, now we MAY have Bethesda, Mistwalker and Bioware Wii games in the future.
Is it likely, I don't know...

The Wii may have 50m consoles available, but Western devs are the most reluctant to address it. Frankly, the userbase still appears to not matter to them right now, and probably won't for the rest of this generation. 360+PS3 is above 50m anyways.

Even when the Wii hits 75 million, you will still have people who could develop for the Wii, don't hate it (like Epic Games does), but just won't do anything for it. Without any incentive to work for/with Nintendo, we will never see their games on Nintendo platforms.

I am excited about the different third parties trying out stuff on Wii. I do think the shovelware was a little over done. Whether Nintendo is going out to fix broken relationships or they are just coming to Nintendo it is a good sign.

SORIKU SAID: Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger Woods 10, Red Steel 2, Conduit, Gladiator AD, Overlord, Grinder, that new Rabbids game, new Bethesda game...There's no may about the Bethesda game, they already confirmed they have one in the works. EDIT:Sorry for the MESSED UP text, forums buggin out on me Ubisoft has been supporting the Wii since the beginning, although many of their games were sub-par efforts. Red Steel 2 is an obvious sequel, to a game that sold 1 million copies. It probably has been in the works for years now, so it isn't exactly a new comearound for Ubisoft. The Conduit, Gladiator AD, and The Grinder are all from one dev who actually cares about the Wii somewhat. However, I do not know what Nintendo is doing to make them stay, probably low dev costs. HVS isn't too big. Rabbids is the 4th in a series of "casual" games that have all sold 1 million. Rabbids Go Home is just a change in the series so it doesn't get stale. So once again, it isn't a new come around, but rather continuing the success of a series. Bethseda...we don't know what the game is, or when it is coming out. Until I see something, it is just a hidden thought. Overlord is from Codemasters, who haven't sold more than 250k of any game for a LOOOONG time. More HD flops could've put them out of business, so Wii development was probably necessary. It isn't like PS360 aren't getting Overlord 2 around the same time...........once again, sequel...... Tiger Woods 10 was bound to happen, the last 2 Wii versions sold ~1 million copies. Once again, no turnaround change. Grand Slam Tennis is probably the only example you've listed here (besides the Bethseda game) that concerns devs caring about the Wii now. In the similar manner of Red Steel, it is a game that launches with/for new hardware, which in this case is Wii Motion Plus. It is more of "let's have our name out there" than "Wii support is a major priority."
