Forums - Gaming - Why do JRPG have such stupid save systems?

I hate the whole specific save points in JRPG. Its the same little circle that are spread extremly far from each other. Usually if you die you have to replay alot of the shit youve done if you dont make it to a save point. It happened to me in Persona 3 last night and also happened to me whenI played ToS:DotnW, Brave Story, Endless Frontier, etc. I hade to replay a whole of hour its pretty frustrating. On top of that Persona is annoying as shit because it throws you all the way back the boot up screen before the title screen. Gotta see damn Atlus logo and everything.

I dont understand why they can't add a normal save feature or checkpoints.

Don't die, noob.

I think that save systems that allow you to save whenever you want would take away some of the difficulty and tension that comes from some JRPG battle systems. The fact that Persona 3 only lets you save at certain points means you have to be careful and figure out whether you have the resources to make it to the next checkpoint. I think I prefer it that way.

...

Because in a JRPG, you might get what we call in climbing "rimrocked."

That's when you are climbing down, and realize you can go no further down, but you can't go back up either. You are stuck.

If the game autosaved, only, then you might get rimrocked at a boss, and have to start the entire game over.

The best system is an autosave/save point hybrid, where a game allows you to retry bosses, but also allows you to save in certain points on your own.

Another reason the JRPG save system is so rigid, is because it supplies challenge and accomplishment. It is an age old technique, but what are jrpgs, if not traditional?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I second that!

I like the save systems. Saving anywhere is kind of stupid.

A land once ravaged by nuclear warheads takes great pleasure in creating games to frustrate you. Who had a save point when those bombs dropped? Tell me that?

Haha how can i save more often when its not possible? You get to save about once an hour so yea talk more shit if you like.

@Torrillian
I understand that too and people are mistaking what Im saying. I dont want to have saves or auto-saves everywhere. I just want more saving options or spots to save. I dont think its fair to have to replay an hour everytime you die.

Play Lunars (TSS/EB or their remakes for PS1), you can save everywhere in both. But in Sega CD version, you get some points after each battle, that you use to either improve your magic or save.
