Forums - Microsoft - Bungie Responds to 640p Claims

I like their response. It does what it needs to do. It says, hey...no one can tell the difference anyway. It puts in plenty of jargon to keep most people in a haze, and it explains it enough that the techies will nod and agree. And it's funny.

so in a round about way... they said yes its 640p... nice... but their duel buffer technique is interesting, I wonder if its really that effective or not.... hmm.

Look at the way the lighting in the game is, especially in motion - moving from light to dark.

Good response... etecoon, about Sony PR good call :)

I can't believe the things people fucken whinge about these days... I would hate to be a developer... to many punks are too eager to stomp up and down with their 105 key swords.

That said, I find a lot of comments that people make quite hilarious because of their sheer stupidity - yet they think they are smart because OMGZ ITS NOT 720P...

It's disappointing that there are so many people who buy and play games that fit this mould...

very good response, and i really dont think they could of gone better with graphics, the lighting is gorgous in this game

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

I think I'll post these in every thread on Halo 3 graphics...

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Naturally it’s more complicated than that. In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see – lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible – so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

Uhh, you could argue, but I think very few people would agree. Does anyone argue that using AA gives you a higer resolution? Sure, FSAA renders the scene at a higher resolution then downscales, but that doesn't give you more resolution, just a better picture.

This method though doesn't even render at a higher resolution. It renders the same image, at the same resoultion, using different lighting parameters, then combines the images.

Not that I care that they've used 1152x640 anyway (all the screenshots look fine), it is the usual internet nitpicking, but that there is the type of PR spin I have become extremely cynical about.

oh for the love of god, people whine too much. On you tv does it look good and are you having fun? Yes. The STFU and play!!!

So that will shut up all the people that bash consoles for not being HD, right?

640p (which doesn't exist actually) is 1138*640. Halo 3 is slightly higher at 1152*640.
720p, the lowest HD resolution, is 1280*720.
Basically, you just lost 20% pixels there. So I don't want to hear that nobody will notice that, because losing 20% resolution is nowhere near unnoticeable, even upscaled, which explains why lots of people have noticed it.
Besides, it's not HD, so I hope not to hear anymore "SD looks like crap on my TV" when Halo 3 should look like crap too.
BTW, Bungie may respond to 640p claims, but that's just to say they were true.
Kudos to the people that proved that with a very good scientific protocol.

So now we can shut Wii bashers with a single sentence : Halo 3 is not HD.

Not really a fan of Microsoft or Halo but I don't see what the big deal has been about this issue. From what Bungie is saying I'd have to agree with them heartily I'd rather have a game rendered in slightly lower resolution for much superior lighting then upscaled to 720p by a chip with that better lighting sounds like a good thing to me. One of my favorite parts graphically on Twilight Princess is the fire dungeon where the lighting effects are done so nicely if I was a Halo fan I'd be very happy to know Bungie cares more about a realistic lighting effect than resolutionz!!! Kudos Bungie to a good design choice and response concerning it.

I don't think you're going to "shut Wii bashers" by pointing out that Halo 3 is in 1152x640.  I doubt there will ever be a Wii game on par with Halo 3's graphics.  No, all this will do is give fanboys another reason to bash the 360 and Halo.

Is it noticeable?  If you know what you're looking for, sure.  But I'm sure the game hardly "looks like crap" because of it.  Be serious now, if you really let a slightly (and it is slightly) lower resolution ruin your gameplay experience, you've got your priorities crooked.

And yeah, 640 isn't evenly divisible by 9, so there is no 16:9 "640p" resolution.  1152x640 is 9:5, interestingly enough.

@Katilian: I agree, the "1280" argument sounded pretty stupid, since offscreen buffer effects are used in all kinds of games.
