Well, if your intention is just to force your girlfriend to play a game you really loved then by all means...  but don't be surprised if she doesn't feel like playing video games after a while.

I like FF VII.  I'd even say I like VII more than IX, though playing through IX with a friend can be a lot of fun.  So I'm not just shouting out favorites here.

IX is definitely a safer bet for women, in my experience.  Think about it...

1.) Unless she already likes Sci-fi (which is usually more popular with men) the world of FFIX is more visually interesting...  more stylized and colorful aesthetic, a kind of fairytale-ish world everyone is a bit familiar with, more polished character models, and way more cuteness (the part with Vivi in the beginning is probably the main reason why FF IX will forever be known as "the girlfriend FF."  That shit is potent.)

2.) You can play the game in multiplayer.  It's really awkward to hand someone a controller and expect them to play something on their own when you're more excited about it then they are.  (Which will probably be true with any old videogame you're convincing your girlfriend to play.) If it's something you can both play together, it's more like she's along for the ride, and it's much easier to get into.

3.) Probably the most exciting beginning of any Final Fantasy.  It's just a bunch of great set pieces, and full of adventure.  A bunch of theives kidnapping a princess.  A mysterious kid exploring a walled city.  A couple of kids sneaking into a castle to see a play.  A hilarious, silly play with a dramatic sword fight.  A bunch of goofy bad guys out of Alice in Wonderland (on hallucinogens).  A chase.  A big escape involving a bunch of cutscenes.  All these things layered over each other and converging at once.

I'm not saying VII isn't also an appealing game for women.  I actually had a creative writing teacher in college who had only started playing video games in her 20s, but thought GTA 3 and Final Fantasy VII were by far the best games ever.  Really, it has to do with each individual person's tastes.  If you want someone to enjoy something, show them what you think they'll like most.  If your girlfriend doesn't like any kind of fantasy or fairytale, then FF IX isn't a good choice.

In my experience, there are a lot of women out there who think video games are all guns, explosions, blood, and dark settings.  If you show someone with those preconceptions something that is really colorful, something like a fairytale but not, you get a chance at surprising them with what they've been missing.  And that's the unique magic of FF IX.

Ahh, i understand where your coming from.

In the case i'd have to agree, though i don't know much about 9... only thing i know is the Art-Style looks.... utter weird and battle system abit slow, but i had NO idea it was 2 players, wow... is that like the only numberd FF with 2p? excluding 11 and 14 that is... >_>

@Kantor- Lulz i know dude, i know, you never did like that one, im sure your right to, but Dark Kingdom is MUCH better i asure, playing with a friend online or local is a BLAST! :D

Actually, most people definitely don't know this, but all of the Final Fantasy games that allow you to have four or more party members in battle at once* have a multiplayer option. Basically, once you're in the game, go to the menu, go to "config" or "system" options, and look for controller options. You can set however many party members you want to be controlled by the second player instead of the first player in combat. It's kind of like the Tales games, you could play the whole game without realizing it's there. But it's a great option.

This is why whenever I hear that a new FF is only going to have 3 people in battle at once, part of me dies deep down, on the inside. Of course, I still play them and end up loving them.

* I guess FF XII broke this tradition, actually, if you count the NPCs as a fourth party member.

Oh, he can and will :)

Seriously though, it's worth a playthrough. I actually beat it for the first time with my girlfriend (I never owned a PS1 so I only saw parts of it back when it was new) and it was probably one of my most enjoyable playthroughs of any FF in my life, despite the fact that there are parts of it I don't like.

wah? really? ....erm............. but didnt VII, VIII, and X have 3?

I don't know much about FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI so...

But VII, VIII and X had 3 for sure...

But ya, lolz wow that sounds like a hidden easter egg actually, omfg now i wish VII had 4... damnit there was enough cahracters in he original VII they should have added it! >:(

@Outlaw- The main character has a ...tail... >_> yeah... i'll only use him in dissidia to beat the Hero story mode, then own him with the fruity feather guy lulz. :P

I don't think anyone should criticize a game they haven't played. At least for a little bit.

Final Fantasy IX is my favorite game of all time. I think it's amazing and Zidane is an phenominal main character. I would highly suggest you play through it.

Sorry. Seraphic and I have a little feud going on about LBP. I keep trying to convince him to buy it, often making the blasphemous statement (according to him) that it is a better game than his precious Valkyria Chronicles, and apparently he has not taken so kindly to my antics. Now he makes snide comments about LBP every chance he gets. :P

You'll gather more flies with honey than vinegar. So if you want him to buy LBP you have to acknowledge that Dark Kingdom is a supurb game.

Don't do it MM!  It's just not worth it!

It really doesn't matter, even more so with him, anyone who chooses LBP over VC (Personal Opinions Aside) haz issues. :D

But i really do prefer Dark Kingdom over LBP now, aswell as rachet AND the R Series, really good stuff here. of course VC > All when it comes to PS3 exclusives, course every1 knows this lulz. :P

Now that is going too far!

What next, it's better than Shadow of the Colossus and God of War?

Go hang out with Squilliam, you both like crappy launch exclusives
