Considering SE's track record in the last 10 years, incredibly slim.

I'm guessing it will be really high in the huge flashy cut scenes and pretty graphics and probably even have decent to good gameplay but it will fail miserably in the parts that really matter: story, characters, and music.

I agree with you but dont know why...can you elaborate

Which part don't you know why?

Their last 10 years?  What have the done in the last 10 years?

  • FFX - A decent game but nothing special.
  • FFXI - It's an incredibly MMO but not exactly your typical Final Fantasy.
  • FFXII - It has the best gameplay (kind of) of any Final Fantasy but the characters are so god awful boring and the story is just so uninteresting that's it's just a terrible game.
  • Endless FFVII remakes - *yawn*

Or was it the what is important in RPG's?

In just about any other game, gameplay is by far the most important thing.  RPG's are odd because they go against that (as do point and click adventures).  Look at any great RPG of SNES/PS days and you will see exactly what I'm talking about.  They all consist of boring grinding and broken mechanics.  So why are these games great?  They are great and still fondly remembered for their powerful stories, strong characters that actually change, and inspiring music.

this S-E hate getting a bit too much

I mean I'm getting a bit sick of it now.......reviewers still love their games (FF12 = AAA, TWEWY = almost AAA, DQ8 = highly rated, FF7:CC = highly rated)

SquareSoft aint coming back so try to forget bout them

sakaguchi isn't coming back, try to forget about him too

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

idk..i just like FF13 wont be huge for some reason, I think its just because SE doesn't have the "Edge" in JRPG category anymore

It's not going to beat IX for me already because Lightning is a Cloud clone... so I guess basically zero for me.

Exactly

I'm certainly not excited about the characters or story, but the music so far is very good. At the very least much better than XII's forgettable score.

FF12 was the most generic FF ever..all FF will be better than it even 10-2 is better

FF12 wasn't generic. In fact, Ivalice is amazing. But the characters... don't get me started ;)

Ah, and it pwns FF IX.

FFX and X-2 were awesome games. And while I hated FFXII because it took a step away from what I loved most about the series, I'd be an ass not to give it the credit it deserved as a great game.

Crisis Core= Greatest Handheld Game EVER

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

That speaks for a lot of games. Also, do things like story and music matter more than gameplay now? People seem to be really out of touch with JRPGs or something.

People meaning...you? JRPG's are the one genre where gameplay often takes a backseat to story, characters, and atmosphere. Who the hell slogs through thousands of tedious random battles for the fun of it? Why are JRPG's with lame gameplay like FF7 but intriguing, involved stories and well-loved characters so phenomeonally popular? Are Bioware games so damn good because of the, uh, gameplay or excellent writing and sharp plotting? If that's how you think RPG's work than I dont think you're really a true RPG fan.

If games ever want to become art (which I think is incredibly possible in so many different ways), I think RPG's are the closest they've come yet.

So despite all of the things that go into a great game, you've already based that off of Lightning being similar to Cloud? For that matter, Steiner was similar to Dekar. I don't know why anyone would really care.

The start of any great JRPG is great characters. This is especially true of Final Fantasy. Cloud was annoying as hell. How is it silly to not like a game as much because it has bad characters?

Yeah, but it's not the only thing. You may think Cloud is annoying, but not every one does. He definitely could have been a better character, but other characters in the cast made up for that. And the start of any great JRPG is great gameplay. In fact, it's the same for any game. And while Lightning might not be that great of a character (at least going by what you say), the rest of the cast could be excellent.

P.S. Why was Khuutra banned?

Er... I never said anything about anyone else. See highlighted section in red.

Most JRPGs don't have great gameplay. There are a couple exceptions like Pokemon, but the general FF turn-based gameplay is very simplistic and lacks strategy... Unless you are talking about FFXII in which case it's complex but once you figure out what you are doing you can beat the game without picking up the controller in combat.

@bobobologna Confirmed that she was modeled after Cloud. source.

PS: Yeah yeah I unbanned him. Chill out people.

I can understand you saying that most JRPGs don't have great gameplay, but Pokemon? Seriously...what? Pokemon has the most simplistic and boring battle system of any RPG that I know of. One character at a time, 4 moves, and they're probably the easiest RPGs on the market. Made for kids with kids in mind. And if you can beat fights in FF12 without picking up the controller, than that means you designed your Gambits very well. Part of the strategy of the game, and it's entirely optional.
