Forums - Gaming - What's wrong with JRPGs today?

So far we have had a few good JRPG's and one excellent JRPG(ToV).

Personally i think the issue with JRPG's at the moment is the way their made. We often end up far too much bad dialogue wasting dev time(and player time), horrible released schedules(seriously localize and the polish at the same time dammit), stories that fail to encourage the user to keep going (even if it doesn't get better make me believe it'll get better) and slow paced gameplay OR large jumps difficulty that promote grinding. (wouldn't be a problem if gameplay was more fun).

Well at least ill be able to import FFXIII spring 2010 (i doubt the PAL version will be out before holiday 2010/early 2011)

I think the problem is the cultural barriers.  JRPGs tend to target the Japanese audience.  It is not a coincidence that games like TLR and SO score very well in Famitsu.  Persona overcomes this because Atlus actually knows what they are doing.  Localizing a game is a process that should help the game appeal more to foreign gamers yet S-E think the best way is to translate the dialogue without changing anything.

Well ok, how bout this then, what were the amazing and technically impressive JRPG's of the last gen?

Persona 4, Persona 3, Kingdom hearts II,  Final fantasy X, very good JRPG's!

And none of those have seen a current gen iteration in the series.  So the answer for why this gen haven't seen any of those was pretty easy.

DQ8 should be added to that list.

No it should not.....I think one of the most important aspect of a JRPG is and always will be it's story and gameplay. DQ8 offers very little in terms of an engaging story when compared to Persona, KH and FFX. Also it's gameplay can easily be considered the weakest among the mentioned.

your kidding right??? DQ8 was one of my all time favourites. its stroy was just as engaging as Persona and KH

@reaver_x

DQ8's story was generic & boring.

Gameplay was nothing too fascinating either

I don't understand the DQ craze in japan, the games hardly ever innovate from what I've seen

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Sure. It's still the worst RPG and one of the worst games I've ever played, though

oh please...theres far worser RPG's out there and u no it

Most assuredly. But I haven't played them, I try to avoid crap games. Thus, it's the worst I've played

Eh, the thing about RPG games is they don't rely on technology.... at all.

Their programming mechanics are very simple and could be done even on the NES.

Things like FPS and other games just naturally improve with technology as long as people direct that power towards things like AI and amount of content.

So just like books... the quality of the product will likely vary rather then be a spike upwards.

Of course one could argue that some games like FPS haven't improved much this generation either.

Yet still RPGs have generally been the same since the NES.

I think JRPG would mean RPG for Japanese market and the most important thing is to please Japanese gamers.

DQ8 is very well reviewed critically and sale wise in Japan. The story, while cliche, is well told because of the characters. The graphic and music are outstanding. The traditional battle system is kept to please the fans. As mentioned by someone earlier, the game is fun for me and quite a lot of Japanese gamers.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
