Arc Rise Fantasia looks like a pretty good JRPG. As for last-gen, try Tales of Symphonia.
Damn it, all this Vesperia talk is really tempting me to pick it up right now, but I am still holding off to see if the PS3 version will hit stateside. I guess I could play Abyss again to whet my appetite for the Tales series.
As for RPGs of today, I really can't say. I haven't played many current gen RPGs compared to the mass amounts back in the PSone and PS2 era. Actually, when I think about it, if you don't count Valkyria Chronicles,(Damn good game.) the only real JRPG I can say I played this gen is Enchanted Arms. Now I'd rather not base my opinion on RPGs of today based on that game alone, as it wouldn't be positive in any way. With that said, I still have faith in the genre, but that's with the assumption of still not playing many JRPGs this gen for whatever reason.
SE 's three blockbuster franchises are yet to make the generational leap.
That's what's wrong with JRPGs today.
Star Ocean had AMAZING graphics.... I don't think you really should leave that out ;) If you don't believe me, play it!! Really.
Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

DQ8 should be added to that list.

No it should not.....I think one of the most important aspect of a JRPG is and always will be it's story and gameplay. DQ8 offers very little in terms of an engaging story when compared to Persona, KH and FFX. Also it's gameplay can easily be considered the weakest among the mentioned.

I think the modern RPGs of today are great even if not as great as the best of the past.
Eitherway people seem to have more interest in WRPG and those are better than ever.
LOL i thought FF10 sucked ... There were MANY great J-rpg's out there that are MUCH better than ff10 ... thats just me tho, alot of poeple loved FF10 for some reason ... i had muh more fun with oter less known Jrpg's like rogue galaxy, dark cloud, odin sphere, tales of legendia / abyss, phantasy star, suikoden 3,4,5 , star ocean, atelier iris etc etc

one of the big 3 did make an awesome RPG..... though you can argue that it's ARPG but it's a JRPG non the less =P. oh and I just finished Arc Rise Fantasia, that game is pretty solid =) not big budget or anything but just plain solid. it did get an 8/8/8/8 on famistu after all =).
