I think Ayatollah Ali Khamenei fears that a ruler eager to have good relations with the West could potentially lead to a situation in which Iran collapses much like the Soviet Union did.

Intriguing... it's so hard to figure out why you would rig an election for puppet ruler.  I suppose as a puppet ruler you are still given a lot of lattitude in iran.

Well, not the traditional military. The Revolutionary Guards and the Basij. Really, the Guards have much political and economic power. If they wanted to rig the election, they would have the power to perpetrate it.

I think the reason is much more simple, there's still a lot of hate in Iran among the older generations towards the US because of the US propping up the Shah who brutally oppressed his people, its not an issue with the youth, because they weren't around then

Yeah after reading it, it makes sense and jives with everything else i've read.

Crazy stuff.

The Revolutionary Guards make a killing off the black-market. They have good reason to fear better relations with the West.

It looks Khamenei may have had little to nothing to do with it. He too has reason to keep Mousavi out of power, though, as they were rivals in the 1980s.

Interior Ministry employees (who  were supposed to monitor and count) said that votes were never tabulated - they just received them, and a number was arbitrarily assigned to each candidate. (Somewhat conflicting, I've been told that the votes were actually counted by low-level officials who told Mousavi that he was winning, only to have higher-ups announce a "revised" total that showed Ahmadinejad with 60%.)

Newspaper offices have been occupied, and phone and internet has been out in Tehran for over a day. People are twittering the news, if you can believe that.

Apparently the Rvolutionary Guards conducted their own poll a week before the election. It showed Mousavi ahead by double-digits, where had been essentially tied with Ahmadinejad a few weeks before. They panicked.

Interesting developments going on lately. Funny how useful something like Twitter has become.

The opposition seems to be a lot greater then expected. This may turn bloody on an unbelievable level... either that or the Supreme Leader has to take a massive Uturn and possibly go against the revolutionary guard...

Can't see that.

US is looking pretty islationist... so it's on the EU to pressure and protect the Iranian youths.
