This is interesting. I'd like to see a worldwide list, too. Does anyone have that data? I guess I could just use the VGChartz graphs, huh?

Seems Europe is the deciding factor, which is also the least accurate region.

Considering the absurdly high value of the euro in 2007 along the increased sales, Europe single handedly saved the PS3.

They could at least release a celebration bundle with a 1/3L mini-bottle of champagne =D

Instead they got the Terminator bundle. Doh!

Now Playing: The Witcher (PC)

Consoles Owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, Game Boy, DS

Xbox 1 had 2 halos
PS3 has no halos

It's not even Europe, it's Japan as well, which easily sold better then the XBox 360, as it have over 2 million more units sold in Japan. I'd like to see Europe sales only without U.S. or Japan. Worldwide the PS3 will show a fast sales because the system has always sold better in Japan and better early on in Europe.  If Microsoft could sell about twice what it's selling in Japan now, they'd be in good shape. They are slowly breaking into the Japan market though and getting companies like Capcom, SquareEnix, Konami and Namco to support their system is a huge start.

What does VGC define as europe? the eurozone/ the EU/ what countries are included in this draft.

it feel like  british isles  are left off, but when you see economic reports dealing with euro zone the isles are factored in. when you see reports about how the EU has more economic power then the US it is factored in as well.

sorry misread the graph still want to know though

so i would just like clarity on what it is here.

I didn't realize this, but I'm sure the Sony bosses are aware of it. Makes you wonder how they justify these numbers to their shareholders.

with all the trouble in the US$ being lower, and priority for a $400.00 game system compared to a $250.00, or $199.00 system you don't think sony know's they are going to still have lower # of system's sold..?, that's like saying the lux. car will have sold more over a mid size lower priced car.It would not be expected to even with PR saying So. they can say thing's PR wise to prop up their position. but to think they don't know their market share would be lower is pretty far fetched.

you do not think share holder's would not look at that as the main reason. or be suprised that at $400.00 Sony has managed to sell through 20 million+ systems world wide in under 2 years. Share holder's do not just look at the US they do not care where the sales are as long as there is sales. the playstation is sold in (64) countries world wide, there is quite a bit of growth that can be obtained. most people buy shares for long term returnswich are greater than "short term"

Yeah lol.

I mean, NoE being dimwits? Eh, Europe's pretty much been a meh Nintendo region sales wise.

But SCEE?

Oh well...

@ joeorc,

I'm pretty surprised at how arrogant Sony has become in the past 2 generations, so I wouldn't be surprised if they truly think that their system is a downright bargain at $399.99, and are appalled that people aren't scooping them up off the shelves as soon as they arrive. Nintendo had the same arrogance problem in the 80s and early to mid 90s. It led to bad business decisions. I'm not a Sony fan, but I want good competition, and right now Sony isn't really pushing Nintendo. MS (with their lower prices and family series of games) are pushing Nintendo much more than Sony is.

Also, I find it funny that you mention the 20 million sold. You're a glass-half-full kinda guy ;) Just imagine if they had lowered the price how many more units they would've sold. Perhaps another 5-10 million, or more? Who knows!

It's good to keep in mind that the Japanese typically think MUCH longer term than Americans, and I know Sony has many more product lines than smallish Nintendo, so it's harder for them to stay focused. However, the future success of Sony's Bluray hinged on the PS3 being dominant in this generation like the PS2 was in the last generation. That hasn't come close to being reality. I feel that if they had lowered the PS3 price early, and taken some big losses, they would've pushed the market to adopt the Bluray players faster, and thus improved their position in the long run. Right now, their short-term outlook is bleak, and their long-term outlook isn't much different.

Hardware is only a means to enjoy great games!

I think Microsoft will kill this holiday season with amazing bundles, no price drop.

the PS3 has been selling less every month compaed to last years numbers.
its the price point and you can get the same thrid party games on the 360 for 100 dollars cheaper so its a no brainer why people will buy the 360 over the PS3

VITA 32 GIG CARD.250 GIG SLIM & 160 GIG PHAT PS3

yeah but to be fair the PS3 is more expensive and we're in a recession now. Plus Xbox is an American console so it kinda makes sense it does well on its home turf.

@ moondeep

you stated this:

"However, the future success of Sony's Bluray hinged on the PS3 being dominant in this generation like the PS2 was in the last generation."

your statement is "implying" Blu-Ray is just a Sony format and that IN ORDER FOR Blu-Ray to make it it needed the PS3.

your Opinion is noted but i disagree.

1) Sony is not the only of company that make's Blu-Ray and has never been the only company to do so since Blu-Ray first went to the market in 2003 there was more than just Sony creating Blu-ray recorder's, and optical drives.

2) 11 of the largest optical drive manuf. all have been on board with Blu-Ray since 2002 and while the Whole HD DVD vs' Blu-Ray was going on they still supported Blu-Ray.

The PS3 was just another device that had Blu-Ray ,The Blu-ray format would have made it even without the PS3 ..Yes it would have taken longer but it still would have made it. was it a good choice for Sony to put Blu-ray into the PS3 some say yes some say no it was not.

Its all Opinion, but for what ever side you choose Sony did what they did because they felt they needed too. Sony feel's Investing into Blu-Ray was a wise choice and Sony has been investing since 1997..along with 11 of the largest Optical drive manuf. all felt the same Investment into Blu-ray was a good choice.
