I think they were just blinded by their success with the PS1 and PS2, thinking they could do no wrong and the PS brand was more powerful than it was.
It's a trap that hopefully other companies will not fall for.

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

Their CEO saying that if the playstation ever sold 1 million units he would resign as he clearly knew nothing of the games industry.
Ofcourse he didn't but it's a good quote. Should really be about all 3 companys though. Not fair to single sony out.

but most of the stuff microsoft said was about apple.

I don't see your point ...
Sony's PR department was not releasing these, it was the CEOs during interviews. I think PR would not "really" be involved during a one on one interview.
The value that Phil Talked about was due to the fact that a $599 PS3 60 Gig cost Sony ~$849 to MAKE "not" counting R&D costs.
I have to say that some of these are really funny. I am sure they have regretted saying these.

It was a counter quote. Or whatever... Still if this troll is only directed at how bad sonys pr is it should be locked. Especially conciering a lot of the quotes weren't done by pr people... and some of them aren't bad either... Ripped out of context you can make most things sound bad you know.
