(99% anyway)
1.) The extremist blind fanboy (like a suicide bomber) - the kind that will defend a particular console or franchise to the end of the earth, no matter how logical the argument is against them. they will cite one sided statements and close their eyes to other facts in order to get their console or franchise to rise in reputation.
2.) The logical mediator (like a hostage negotiator) - the kind that goes into fanboy arguments and attempts to diffuse them using test figures that are published throughout the net, along with basic common sense taken from experience playing games.
example:
crazzyman: "PS3 is the most powerful console!"
onyxmeth: "Look, these game developers say that the in some areas, the 360 does better.."
crazzyman: "NO! The Cell is 100x more powerful, and they just don't know how to use it!"
onyxmeth: "But see, they ran tests on both consoles to determine the graphics speed processing etc.."
crazzyman: "MS PAID THEM FOR THOSE NUMBERS!"
3.) The super techies (they feel like MIT professionals) - there are some seriously great technical minds in here. these are the kind that can answer any question with regards to the innards of any game device, have information on processors, graphics cards, internet speeds, storage used by particular games, etc.
4.) The tech idiots (people who know nothing about machines) - and hand in hand with those geniuses come these guys who know nothing about tech and always seem to ask simple questions about things.
example:
bugrimmar: "I need help with my new PC.."
NJ5: "bahaha, never fear, I know all that's needs to be known about PCs!"
bugrimmar: "So how do you remove the background color of the desktop wallpaper..?"
NJ5: "*facepalm* you idi--er, all you gotta do is this, my friend..."
bugrimmar: "What?"
5.) The biased in disguise (wolves in sheeps' clothing) - the kind that state at the beginning of their threads that they're not biased, and provide some proof to their statement in some way, for the purposes of coming out with a terribly biased statement.
6.) The flame hunter (those who thrive in battle) - and when these threads pop up (every day it seems) there are always people who come in with pitchforks and shoot the attack down. they might not even care about the statement in question, but they will be in defensive mode nonetheless, purely for the sake of argumentation.
example:
Megaman2: "I'm no longer the Sony leader. I just bought a 360."
starcraft: "Really now, so what's the best game you've played on it?"
Megaman2: "The best game of all time is still MGS4."
starcraft: "You're SO wrong on SO many levels. That's because... (list)"
Megaman2: "Look, I have both consoles so I am NOT BIASED!"
7.) The storyteller (on the forum for random things) - people who make threads that are rather unrelated to the console war and prefer to just talk about random stuff. sometimes this stuff can be game related (my random stint as a game shop manager) or it can be completely beyond (my opinion on the relationship between AI and the end of the world).
8.) The random bumper (*post*) - guys who like to just state their opinions in any thread (especially the aforementioned storyteller threads) without even reading the original post. they oftentimes miss the point and just go on about their post from just the thread title.
example:
bugrimmar: "I was a store manager for a day..."
d21lewis: "I think it was the philosopher, Carrot Top who said, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Wise words, Carrot Top. Wise, indeed."
bugrimmar and others: "(wtf?) ok, let's move on..."
9.) The rumor = truth guy (anything for a scoop) - guys who like to quote everything from everyone and paste them as truth. subjects from blogs, fansites, random press conferences, and magazines that blatantly paste "rumor" on the page taken as reality without question. this also includes posting numbers from Amazon and the like and treating them as worldwide numbers.
10.) The sarcasm master (YES! Noooooo...) - the kind that go into these threads and others with a preset mindset but they go about it in the most peculiar manner..
example:
random new member: "This blog states that MGS4 is coming to 360. Also, Killzone 2 is number 1 in the world now according to Amazon."
badgenome: "*random pic*"
everyone else: "ROFL"
11.) The philosopher (let's study the case of...) - people who like to bring out intellectual arguments for the benefit of just solving the mystery.
example:
Khuutra: "I think that violence in games has come to a point of distaste.. let us examine God of War 3.. Don't you think they're overstepping..."
12.) The newspapers (headline!) - guys who like to break the bank. even the most random news, the most insignificant things placed on the net, are posted just for the heck of it.
example:
Rainbird: "Developers explain Infamous exclusivity.. it's because they like to work with Sony."
others: "okay... *crickets*"
13.) The pure hearted game lover (a rare breed) - people who actually just like games, and have no real permanent allegiances to particular franchises or consoles. they are perfectly capable of rating their favorite franchise low, as it deserves (we need more of these).
example:
zexen_lowe: "I love Suikoden, but the one on the DS was rather *meh*"
14.) The spammer (here we go, the rest of you) - people who post just for the sake of posting. a close cousin of the random bumper, but this kind posts more of stuff that has no relation whatsoever to the thread at all. they also usually divert threads to another direction completely away from the original topic.
example:
topic: PS3 is the best!
kirby007: "I think Nokia phones are the best."
others: "yeah.."
15.) The opinionated (I think.. therefore I am..) - a group that generally just posts their opinions on something that they obviously don't know nor care about.
16.) The elitist (STAY IN LINE) - and whenever an opinionated post comes out, the gaming elitists come out to "correct" his post in the most offensive manner.
17.) The ego tripper (You're the milk and I'm the cream) - people who create images of themselves and declare whatever they say as law, despite how foolish or baseless they seem.
example:
numonex: "I think a PS3 price cut will destroy the Wii."
Twesterm: "fool, look what you guys said about GTA4 and MGS4 destroying the Wii. STUDY before POSTING!"
Megaman2: "Twesterm, you know nothing. As the Sony leader, I know that the PS3 WILL win this console race, because I have insider info!"
18.) The lurker (post today, post next year) - *thanks for pointing this out* there are a few who choose to post only when they really have something relevant to say, hardly ever bother to reply, and always seem to bring out just one intelligent point before leaving for another month. this group is usually highly knowledgeable, though also mostly forgotten.
example:
random wii fan: "I think Wii is the shiznit."
OriGin: "You're right, but see, there are specific reasons why that is.. it's because of Motion Plus being more accessible than the others.. (list) *byebye*"
19.) The girl gamer (there ya go honey..) - a rare breed as well, these few girl gamers are usually fawned over and very popular. usually allowed a lot more respect than usual, such that even if they make a rather odd post, most of the time they're forgiven for it. even the smallest of posts gets a large number of replies.
example:
topic: "The top 10 game characters of all time"
men: "Good list OP!"
lolita: "I think more women need to be on that list."
men: "YEA, OP you're an idiot."
20.) The fortune teller (10 million first week!) - a category of predictors that like to peer into the crystal ball and pull out a number that is waaay beyond realistic expectations. they are close cousins with the blind fanboy, but sometimes they create predictions without any allegiance to that particular console or franchise. when there's a prediction they don't like (something too low), they come out guns blazing about how great the game is and how great it should sell.
21.) The trend analyst (hmm, maybe.. based on..) - predictors that go for the much more safe approach, going with trends and charts, and when there's an irrational prediction they're the first to assault with numbers, history, and reality. if the fortune teller persists, he will get irritated quite quickly.
example:
chapset: "LBP will sell 1 million first week."
MontanaHatchet: "More like 200k. You gotta see trends.."
chapset: "But.. the game is a link between casual and core!"
MontanaHatchet: "Look man, stop trolling. It's a new ip on the console with the lowest install base. YOU KNOW you're wrong."
22.) The Hype train driver (WOWOW the best game of all time...) - people who are generally easy to please. in June they'll say this is the best game, and then in December they'll say that is the best game. their purpose is only to generate internet overhype, thinking it equals to real world hype. they usually also haven't really played the full game, basing their opinions on videos, demos, or beta tests.
example:
RED53DEVILS: "I saw the video and MGS4 is the best game ever."
--6 months later--
RED53DEVILS: "I played the beta and Killzone 2 is the best game ever"
Did I miss anyone? lol..
