Forums - Gaming - Is NATAL bound to "FAIL"?

The product looks great and interesting. The imagination of what this product can do seem to be limitless if you belive Microsoft and the media. But at this point, alot due to it being so soon after E3, it seems as the 360 community (among others) is setting NATAL up to be the product to end all products. The hype and excitement for this product is overwhelming, and Microsoft is flaunting this all over the media with celebrities and television shows etc.

But for a product that seems to have quite a long way to go, will this "marketing" and hype bring NATAL to a similar fate as Playstation Home for example? Will this hype set consumers up to be dissatisfied when this product finally hits the public? And could this initial hype kill the products value more than helping it towards success?

What's your thoughts on it?

I believe it could go either way.

But, ultimately whether it succeeds or not is up to MS. If they market the hell out of it. It could be a hit.

It lies completely on MS's shoulders. If they offer compelling experiences that equal the media blitz that will no doubt come with its launch, then they have a good chance of the product taking off. If they do not offer compelling experiences, it will fail. So at this point in time, we have no idea about what actual games are going to be available, so at this point in time, we have no idea how it will perform.

It appears that MS has built some quite good 3rd party relations, so they are in a good position to provide support to Natal.

It will be a hit and it will sell some millions. it won't be wii-like, but it will definately push the Xbox360, at least in America.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

It needs games. Tons of games. Fun games. Without that, it's doomed to failure.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

You have to wonder why MS are going on such a media blitz with R&D "beta" stuff. If the intent is to create a product with Natal then they're seriously jumping the gun too soon. However, if it's a FUD campaign, then the timing makes sense. I seriously doubt we'll ever see anything close to what's being promised.

I agree with Malstrom, Microsoft doesn't have a good history with hyped products.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Home never seemed as revolutionary as NATAL...unless you're tryin to argue that a pumped up version of Second life is a groundbreaking revolution.

As for you question I don't know if it will hit or miss but one thing is sure:  this kind of spontaneous media coverage  is something that no other MS gaming-related product has ever achieved....not bad for a device that's at half a year from its launch.

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

When would a probable release date be? 2010? 2011? With the next generation of consoles? And will this initial hype of a "fresh" product still feel fresh once the Wii+ and PS3 motion controller has been released?

Could MS set themselves up for some of that "bring the future now" stuff, but it takes to long and people would've already statisfied their "motion controller"-needs on another console?

Honestly, the Natal looks awesome, but what type of games is it going to get though? More importantly, will it get many games? I can't see much support for it other than a few minigame collections & maybe an Eyetoy: Antigrav ripoff.

I LIKE REDMOON ONLINE. IT'S TEH MOST AWESOMEST MMORPG. RUNESCAPE HAS NOTHING ON IT. ;) My full Videogame collection (Well, not really that full): http://www.backloggery.com/marktheshark I'LL COOL YOUR ANGER WITH AN ICE SPIRIT BLAST!!!!111111!!!!!!111!!!!1!!!
