I think Bioshock has a chance at it. I just hope the sequel doesn't shit all over the name and ruin the franchise in the public opinion...

First Person Shooters are today's equivalent to the top down or side scrolling shooter of the 90's. They were both very popular for their time but they also flooded the market. A new genre will evolve and this new genre will see the same thing happen. It's happened several times now, as long as a company takes a risk to push things forward we'll reap the benefits of the "new game".

The PC market has been playing these games for a very long time. The shooters on that platform are no longer the dominant games. They are still popular but their popularity isn't as high as they use to be.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

Every time a genre gets popular, it gets tons of support. Look at the guitar Hero series, exercising games, they are all over the place.

I don't mind you don't like shooting games, but millions do and developers spend more money making them for a reason.

I know what you're saying but what I'm saying is that.. will people be playing CoD4 in 2019?  Will people be talking about it in 2019?

The games that seem timeless are the ones that are games in their own right.  Not ____ than ____ clones and _____ killers.

Pixel Art can be fun.

The problem with your logic is that noone talks about the games you listed today. Most people are simply unaware of or have forgotten about the games your OP mentioned.

Tease.

Modern Warfare has a shot at becoming a "classic".

Apart from that, i cant think of any current gen shooters.

The shooting game in Wii Play.

You have no soul.

You have.. to play it.

I have, more than once. And in no way is it a "classic"

@SmokedHostage: Not exactly true. Donkey Kong Country which was nothing new at the time is a classic game. It's a stand out title from a very popular genre for it's day. It wasn't a ground breaking game by any means. It offered graphics which many thought impossible for the SNES. It breathed new life into the console and allowed Nintendo to delay the 64 for awhile longer. A classic game will be a game that many people played and have fond memories of. If it stood out somehow amongst the rest of the games in it's genre then it will be remembered.

I still love you smoked

lol, you know space invaders had a real sequel? and it was a total bomb... just a fun fact.

I think the situation mainly comes from technology advancing so much beyond those limited games. I honestly wouldn't ant to play those games for 8 hours straight O.o but with halo, I can, because they have variety. you aren't limited to just going left & right. or whatever.

Those games are classic though, since they pioneered it all. maybe in 20 years, we'll see half-life as a pioneering game. Maybe even halo 2.

I might have a convoluted point, but it's still a point.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need...
