Forums - Sony - Sony had 'no choice' but to include Blu-ray in PS3

Global PlayStation chief Kazuo Hirai has claimed that Sony was left with ‘no other choice’ than to outfit the PlayStation 3 with Blu-ray functionality.

Speaking to The Guardian at E3 last week, Hirai stated, “Purely from a gaming standpoint there was no other choice for us,” adding, “Why? The capacity of the disc. Last year’s Metal Gear Solid 4 was pushing 50GB as it was. If it was on DVD it would have been a 6 disc set.”

Unsurprisingly, the executive dismissed the possibility of having multiple discs, describing it as ‘hugely inconvenient’ for punters: “The packaging and cost would have been prohibitive and it would have been hugely inconvenient to consumers,” he explained.

“So from a gaming standpoint there was really no choice if you wanted a high definition gaming experience.”

Tell me what you guys think. In your opinion, was adding the Blu-Ray drive smart?

I sure love it. One of the reason I bought the PS3. Now, if only they could outfit us with a faster blu-ray reader : P

1 thing i noticed.
MGS4 on 360 would have been 6 discs confirmed?

I think it was a great idea having Blu-ray in the PS3!

The games are uncompressed so the sound is amazing, more room for developers to play with and fill with great content and also only having one disk for a game is a godsend as it would be a pain other than for the FF games as on the PS1 it felt like an accomplishment to get to the next disk...

In my opinion I say that adding the Blu-Ray drive was very smart. It will help PS3 against the 360 in the future.

It's the reason PS3 is my main system hells yeah.

It's also the reason why PS3 will fail

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

"Why? The capacity of the disc. Last year’s Metal Gear Solid 4 was pushing 50GB as it was. If it was on DVD it would have been a 6 disc set.”

Yea, case in point: FFVII was 6 discs, and gamers hated it. It is considered one of the worst games of all time because of it. We gamers are far too lazy to have to get off of our fat asses every 5-10 hours to change out the disc.

Now excuse me as I wade through the sarcasm I just laid out, it's rather thick.

Hasn't the PS3 "failed" since summer 2007?

I mean how many times can it fail......it must be making a record for the number of times a console can "fail"

According to people PS3 failed in 2007, then 2008 holidays, now in 2009 its a failure

so its failed around 3 times so far!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

lol the bluray drive is the main reason why the PS brand when from resounding 1st place to a dismal 3rd place. it added $200 more to price tag and delayed the console 6 months in US and a year in Europe.

how do you guys actually justify it being a good idea?
