Forums - Sales - Pachter: Natal needs 30 games before launch, it's MS's response to Wii HD

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/project-natal-to-launch-as-wii-hd-spoiler-analyst

"We think that Project Natal is intended less as a game control scheme than it is as an easy-to-use dashboard control scheme, and we do not expect the device to be launched at retail until it has sufficient third party game support to justify a majority of the installed base to purchase it (we estimate 30 third party games would be sufficient)," wrote Pachter in a note following last week's E3 conference.

"We do not see Project Natal as a Wii killer; rather, we think that Microsoft intends to introduce it at the same time as the launch of the Wii HD, and hopes to hold off Nintendo’s plans to encroach on Xbox 360 turf after 2010."

This part is also "interesting":

"Among Microsoft’s many announcements, the company unveiled its intention to allow interaction with the Netflix website, to allow free streaming of FM radio through Last.fm, and to allow Xbox Live members to access Facebook and Twitter through the Xbox Live dashboard.

"These announcements demonstrate the power of Xbox Live as a web browser, and signal an intention to convert the 30 million plus installed Xbox 360 base before Apple TV can gain a foothold in the media hub market," he said.

Posting it as a thread as I don't think Pachter's inane predictions deserve a news article.

Wouldn't Microsoft need a time machine to release it alongside the Wii HD based on previous Pachter predictions of when the Wii HD was supposed to be released?

WTF is wii HD?

Has he gone mad, why will nintendo in a way "put an end" to the normal wii's sales

The system Pachter predicts Nintendo will be forced to release because there is no way Nintendo could produce a successful console this generation without advanced graphics that are at least equal to the PS3/XBox 360.

@HappySqurriel: According to this article from August 2007, he was expecting the Wii HD in 2-3 years:

@Happy Squirel

exactly, he's finally gone mad!!!!

Why would nintendo put an end to the normal wii's sales when its BREAKING RECORDS right now.

Why would they announce so many 1st party AAA games for 2010 just to then release a wii HD

whats wrong with him!

Ah, Pachter: still crooning the same marketing hype that gamers need HD.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Pachter just doesnt get the Wii audience. The new audience the Wii has created is not likely to be an audience that feels the need to upgrade consoles often. Add to that WiM+ and you see Nintendo is expecting to live on with the Wii for quite some time. Since Nintendo has given up on high end graphics and multimedia and barely pays attention to online they need to figure out what could be the next disruptive tech. Without it Nintendo wants the Wii to live a very long life.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Nintendo wouldn't make it so an HD Wii couldn't play other Wii games.

I the Xbox 360 launched with 15 games (if I'm correct) why would Natal need 30 games for?
