Forums - Gaming - Next gen perspective from someone who hasn't made the leap yet.

Hi everybody I'm new to this forum. Been lurking in  the shadows for a while though lol. Right now I want to talk to everybody about how I (Someone who doesn't own a next gen console yet) think about this generation currently.

Now last generation I owned all consoles Ps2 being my favorite for its variety and having the most RPG's since its one of my favorite genres. I liked all of them they all had something good to bring to the table. But to me this current generation of games is missing something.

Lets start with the 360. I don't see myself owning one of these in the near future due to it being so 1 dimensional. They seem to only want to cater to one audience and thats fans of shooters of any kind. If you look at their best games  that are out or coming out they are shooters. (Halo 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect Bioshock) I like shooters but come on wheres the variety.

Now for the wii. My little brother owns one of these so I have alot of experience with this system. I used to absolutely love wii sports and Zelda until they got old. Now all we do when we play wii is play Smash brother Melee for the gamecube. That isn't good at all. Wii's future line up looks bright though with the new smash bros and super mario galaxy coming out. But those were to be expected. Where's the good 3rd party games at Nintendo? Push those developers to make you some good games.

As for Ps3. Do you even care any more sony? Its like they have been sleep for the first year in the console war. They have good games so far but no great ones. Some of the good games they had are being turned into multiplatforms or threatened to turn into multiplatfrom like Devil May Cry, Katamari, Metal Gear solid. And on top of that they boast that they have the best graphics but allow companies like EA to release games that aren't at their max potential.

Now I know it a little early on in these systems lives and maybe my expectations were too high but I expected more. I guess I'll just be playing my Ps2, GC, Xbox and PSP until next year and see where things go.

And thanks to everybody who reads this.

Peace

You are not the only one, just do like me and buy the cheap good games on PS2, GC, Xbox and DC

Makaveli777: I almost feel the same way. I am not going to buy nextgen console for a while. All three companies are failing at the moment to convince me.

Welcome to the forums; you can't really say there aren't good 3rd party games coming to the Wii though; (Nights, RE:UC,etc) I'd say there are good games coming, it's just that they're not quite "hardcore". As for Sony, I think they can't do anything to change the market right now; from the moment they went for BR, they "condemned" themselves to 3rd place, at least at the start. IMO PS3 is a lot more worth for its money than both Xbox360 and Wii (hardware-only talking). I think 3rd parties have found a new home after the PS family in Microsoft's machine; they'll get the most 3rd party support.

I think a lot of gamers are in that boat and with the pricetags, it's hard to justify purchasing a console until you know it has the games you want to play.

At this point, there is no one console to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Console launches in general are usually pretty dissapointing, or soon lead to disappointment. The 360 had a very bad launch lineup, and the PS3's was only a little better. The Wii had the best lineup, but some of the games, like you said, can get pretty trite after awhile. It is just one of the costs of being an early adopter to have to deal with the initial fumblings of launch.

The 360 is coming into its own, but does to some degree neglect other gamers besides shooter fans. It has RPG's, but Blue Dragon is hit or miss, and Eternal Sonata is coming to PS3 eventually. You won't hear me say a bad thing about Lost Odyssey though, cause that game looks really good.

I think all the consoles have a strong lineup this holiday, and I think the PS3 has the best post-holiday lineup with Infamous (possibly), Little Big Planet, and Killzone 2.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Wow thanks for reading everybody. So I guess Im not the only one who feel this way. I thought I was just old school or somethin lol. Truthfully though right now I would rather be playing my Genesis, PS1 and Snes than the next gen consoles right now. But I'll give them time b4 Im too harsh on them. :) Just goes to show though... graphics aren't everything.

Buying new technology on impulse is a mistake many of us make. I'm impressed that you didn't blindly dive into a next-gen system until you know which one you really want. Your 1st year of next-gen is undoubtedly going to be more fun than mine. All 3 systems are gonna rock. I still think Wii60 is the most complete experience at this time, though.

Well a far more relevant statistic might be this for you to make a informed decision about which console will serve your fetish best. These lists are derived from IGN.com and only reflect the RPG genre for each of the next generation consoles.

Microsoft has 42 titles released or planned in development.

http://xbox360.ign.com/index/games.html?constraint.game_genre_name.game_genre_1.game_genre_2=RPG%3A&constraint.return_all=is_true

Nintendo has 16 titles released or planned in development. Seven of which are for VC..

http://wii.ign.com/index/games.html?constraint.game_genre_name.game_genre_1.game_genre_2=RPG%3A&constraint.return_all=is_true

Sony has 35 titles released or planned in development

That should help you make a educated decision if you want to make a thoughtful comparison. Obviously your impression of the 360 is somewhat flawed it is obviously not lacking for RPGs now or in the future. I was truly shocked to discover how few titles the Wii actually has your pretty spot on with that analysis. I am also shocked that the PS3 has as many titles as it has.

Well thanks for the list. I guess I should rephrase myself about 360 and the RPG's. It has no Japanese RPGs I would want that arent going to be on ps3 also. Im more into JRpgs than American Rpgs.
