Thanks to WiiMotion+, Golf games have went from untolerable to sort of fun (That's a BIG jump for me)
Can't wait for WSR.

IGN's VT review is in, and it scored a fair bit lower than GST. Mostly a lot of complaints about graphics, animations, and sound.

There was no mention of the AI being unusually hard, but the reviewer did say that lag while online was 'a bit of an issue.'

and now Eurogamer say

Although it's by no-means foolproof, the general direction and velocity of any given shot is replicated far more convincingly than it was in Grand Slam, and as such is by far the superior use of the WMP to date.

A few residual issues with the running mechanic aside, VT2009 can now justifiably claim to be the best tennis game available on Wii, and Sumo deserves much credit for utilising the WMP in the way we always assumed it would.

I'm really confused. So far VT2009's getting better scores.

So far on GameRankings
VT2009: 83.40%
GST: 74.27%

Grand Slam Tennis to be re-reviewed

This morning we received a tip-off from our colleagues at Eurogamer.de that they had encountered substantial differences in Wii MotionPlus performance on their Wii debug review kit and their retail Wii console. Obviously this set off alarm bells - Kristan Reed had reviewed Grand Slam Tennis on a Wii debug kit.

With the gravity of that in mind, I went out and bought a boxed copy of Grand Slam Tennis and a WMP and hotfooted it round to Kristan's, where we both tested it out. Our German friends were absolutely right: there's a substantial, immediately noticeable difference between the responsiveness playing the game on a retail Wii.

As a result, I'm immediately withdrawing Eurogamer's Grand Slam Tennis review until we will publish a new review based purely on retail console play. The existing text will remain online with big whopping signposts on it that highlight the above, and once the replacement review is published, it will redirect to that.

Furthermore, while Virtua Tennis 2009 was reviewed on a retail Wii without issue, the text published today makes numerous references to Grand Slam Tennis, so until such time as the EA game is reappraised, I'm also withdrawing the VT review.

Both the new Grand Slam Tennis review and an updated Virtua Tennis 2009 review will be published on Monday.

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise to EA Sports for the original GST review, which was clearly not representative of the product. EA has not asked us to withdraw it, nor issue this retraction, but I believe both are the right thing to do. I must also apologise to you, our patient readers, if you were misled by the mistake.

For the record, the mistake - 'catastrophe' is probably a good word, actually - was down to out-of-date firmware on our Wii debug machine, which neither our EA contacts or us apparently knew anything about. This meant that Wii MotionPlus only worked to a diminished degree during our review process. We had received the game and WMP accessory direct from EA, and reviewed GST in good faith.

We will clearly be extremely mindful of this possibility in future and be drawing up additional safeguards internally to prevent a repeat.

Once again, I'm very sorry for our mistake.

Grand Slam Tennis to be re-reviewed

Very, very interesting.  I just picked up the game today after being undecided for about two weeks on which tennis game to get.  Will give it a try after work.  What tipped it over for me was the fact that it is apparently almost impossible to defeat the computer in Virtua Tennis and the online is quite bad compared to GST.  Seems like I may have made the right decision but we shall see.  I think it is a bit common for EA games to have some copies that are buggy, even retail copies.  For example there are some VGChartz members who got a buggy version of Boom Blox Party and so hate the game even though it is actually not a bad game at all.

The first couple of hours were really hard to master GST with M+ and a nunchuk, but after 2 days of playing, I've managed to win 8 games in a row against the AI. It feels quite natural and sometimes it can flow really smoothly in the rallies which makes it a real joy to play.
The Party modes are quite fun.

I like it more then Wii Sports Tennis.

I've added Videogamer.com's VT review. It scored a 7, just like they gave GST, but Videogamer joins IGN in giving the nod to Grand Slam Tennis as the better game of the two. They said VT's online worked well and make a claim contrary to what other impressions have suggested. They say the AI is monotonous, dready and mind-numbing until you break into the top ten.

I've also added Eurogamer's VT review, since it sounds like they're only going to change the content of the review as VT relates to GST, and not the scoring in absolute terms. Eurogamer's GST review has been crossed out until they sort things out.

Updated the OP with Eurogamer's new Grand Slam Tennis review. The score has been upgraded to an 8, grouping Eurogamer in with the growing consensus that EA's tennis game edges out Sega's Virtua Tennis '09.
