Forums - Nintendo - Eurogamer trashes Grand Slam Tennis. 5/10

Regarding Wii MotionPlus, the review ends like this:

You can't blame Wii MotionPlus for this failure, because it's almost impossible to tell whether it's helping or hindering. What you can say is that Grand Slam Tennis isn't very good either way. Bring on Wii Sports Resort.

Just when I was almost decided on getting this instead of Virtua Tennis. Now I'm not sure again. Have Eurogamer reviewed VT as well?

Not yet. I think ONM is the only reviewer I've seen which has reviewed both games. They gave VT a 76, IIRC, and they gave GST a 90.

Yes that's the only place I've seen both reviewed so far as well. My gut feel before any reviews was that I'd like VT more, then I read the ONM reviews then Eurogamer.....

I'll just wait!

"Watchmen" is far better than The Dark Knight / Why does no-one own this wonderful game: Fragile Allegiance? / Speak (Type) Italian to me!

ONM has reviewed both games and gave Virtua tennis 79% and Grand slam 90%, I'm very happy with the scores too.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

mario maker

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

zelda U

majora's mask 3d

eurogamer gives a lot of low scores for wii third party games so dont take it seriously.

Aren't Eurogamer's reviewers usually harsh?

I remember going on metacritic to read summaries of reviews and I usually end up seeing Eurogamer giving a score lower than usual on most games I've seen.

Maybe it's just me.

I expect that game to have a 75-80 score on Metacritic.

MSG ME AS YOU ADD.

Eurogamer has a normal rating system instead of the stupid "7=bad 8=decent 9=good 10=awesome" scale.

At their site, 5/10 actually means mediocre

Their review is crap. IGN gave it an 8.5 and called it a must play.

Grand Slam Tennis is an impressive package on Wii, and one of the best tennis games I’ve ever played. This opening year of Wii MotionPlus support – and the fact that it’s the first time out the gate for this series – leaves a few odd experiences to be had, and it’s not quite a true 1:1 experience for real-racquet movement, but minus a bit of a learning curve and some mechanical serving the experience is surprisingly fun and really, really addictive. It may seem daunting at first to deal with character movement, swing control, and button modifiers for lobs and drops, but once you get in the zone you’ll feel a level of connectivity that other games on the system just don’t have, and it’s paled only in comparison with Tiger Woods which is simply amazing this year. On top of some impressive, extremely accurate – once you get the feel for them – motion controls the game is also packed with content, including a full Grand Slam career mode, create-a-character, impressive online play that puts country vs. country play at the forefront of it all, and a party mode I actually want to play. I’m hoping EA goes even further with MotionPlus next year, including stronger motion serving and true hand-tracking, but as a debut franchise and rookie MotionPlus effort EA is already raising the bar for sports games on Wii.

RatingDescription

8.0 Presentation
It’s got every Grand Slam venue and pro player you could want, but you won’t find pointer support or even analog stick menu support. As for modes though, this game is packed.
8.0 Graphics
The style might throw some people off, but when you’re in mid-rally you’ll appreciate the larger ball and character silhouettes. Slick, polished, but not exactly complex.
8.0 Sound
Some very simplistic commentary links with nice crowd sounds, some satisfying hits and a nice laid back soundtrack. Not bad, and obviously geared towards the casual crowd.
8.5 Gameplay
This isn’t as intuitive as Wii Sports Tennis, but once you master it Grand Slam is a thing of beauty and destroys other motion Wii games. Don’t skip on the nunchuk or motionplus.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
With a full career mode, great online, create-a-player and some decent party modes this one will last you well into next tennis season.
8.5

Does sound like an inability to play the game, IMO. If the problem is the same on normal difficulty vs easy, then its not the game IMO.

This would be like playing RE4: Wii, where dual analog vets can't shoot anything, it's because when they press the B button, the pointer moves slightly (similar to shooting a real gun if anyone else is experienced) and then concluded the game is shit because they can't shoot anything.

Didn't EA say it was having issues with WM+? They said, from a gameplay standpoint, it was a problem? The problem being it was TOO accurate. In other words, your real life weaknesses come out in the game, and you then interpret that as the game being flawed.
