Forums - Sales - PSP Slim & Lite Worldwide releases and sales

On September 14th, the Slim & Lite was released in Europe.  Only the "Piano Black" model has been released in Europe, but we have seen quite a healthy increase in sales since it's release.  We have seen a near 10k increase in the UK alone from 5k in the week ending 9th September to 14k in the week ending 16th September.  Again don't forget the new PSP was only out for 2 days of this week.  There has been significant increases over Europe as a whole with sales increasing from 34k to 79k in the same time frame.  With the new weekly sales figures due out soon, we should see what further impact the new PSP has on the overall sales.

The PSP Slim & Lite was released in North America on 6th September, but was only released as part of the "Ice Silver" Daxter Entertainment Pack costing $199 rather than the $169 standalone price.  There has already been a sharp increase in the number of PSP's sold with a 49% increase in sales with the week ending 8th September, seeing an additonal 18k units sold in only 2 days and with the week ending 15th September, there was a further increase of 19% with an extra 11k units sold from the previous week, seeing a total of 67k units sold for the week.  Although the sales are astronomical and look very small compared to the Japanese release, we cannot forget that the only PSP Slim & Lite released in NA at the moment is the Daxter Pack.  Once the standalone "Piano Black" and "Ceramic White" models are released on 1st and 9th of October respectively, we should see a much larger increase is sales.

Well in Japan, we have seen the biggest impact of the new PSP release.  Crisis Core was released on September 13th along with a special edition PSP Slim & Lite.  Only 77,777 units were made and released and as far as we know, all or virtually all of them sold on the first day.  The official release date of the Slim & Lite in all colours was on 20th September and Japan has gone PSP crazy.  Buying up 130k in the first day alone and approx. 265k over the week.  Obviously we are not sure what the impact will be in Japan over the course, but I'm sure sales of the PSP will be esculated higher than they were before the release.

Overall, since the Slim & Lite's release worldwide in all it's differene versions has seen a huge 380% increase in sales over about 2 weeks (for NA and JP) and 1 week for (EU).  There has been an extra 400k PSP's sold in this time frame.  Although I reckon we have seen the best we can expect, sales wise in Japan.  North America has yet to take off and Europe has yet to put in a full weeks worth of sales.  We will know in a few weeks time, how much of an impact the Slim & Lite has really had since it's release, but going on the short range of sales we have already, it has made a huge impact overall.  I also wouldn't be surprised, to see sales of the PSP take off from now until the end of the year.  Even although the DS is lightyears ahead at over 50m sold worldwide.  The PSP is steadily selling and this new edition of the PSP can only spur sales more.  I think on a whole, the PSP will finish the year on a very strong note and as one of the strongest games machines out at the moment.

I just hope that games sales will increase as well.

I reckon going on numbers on this site at the moment.  The PSP has sold 23.37m worldwide.  I reckon that the number will be above 24.5m by the end of October, which can be looked at being 6 weeks since the release of the Slim & Lite.

My ideas are:

In Japan, from today, the PSP will sell between 450,000 and 500,000 by the end of October, so total numbers in Japan being between 6.56m and 6.61m

In NA, from today, the PSP will sell between 300,000 and 400,000 by the end of October, so total numbers in NA being between 9.50m and 9.60m

And in OR, sell between 250,000 and 350,000 by the end of October, so total numbers being between 8.31m and 8.41m

Total Worldwide sales by the end of October being between  24.37m and 24.62m

Also, one other minor point.  What happens to all the old PSP's on the shelves, when there are loads of Slim's to buy at the same price.

I tell you....the price of the original PSP will be reduced to get rid of it.  I reckon they will either bundle the old unit with a game or two or they will reduce it £10-£20 in the UK or $30-$40 in the US.  You can even get the Slim and a game in the UK for the £130 RRP.  You can pick up the pink old PSP for £82.50 in Argos as well.

Which will promote the PSP even further as it will introduce a new market place pricing point and more units will then be sold.

I see no chance the PSP can match the DS come the holiday season. However that's not to deminish what it's doing right now. It's quite remarkable. Zelda is coming out in NA and Europe, and DQIV and Final Fantasy TA2 are headed for Japan, and in the end the DS just appeals to the masses far better than the PSP. The big issue is how PSP software improves. Does it just spike when big games come out, similar to what happened with GC software sales, or does it get closer to the DS in having games with legs that sell well week in and week out. Only time will tell.

Actually PSP software , as much bashing it got , sold decently lately . Sure , not astronomical level , but they all got steady legs ( ex : D&D Tactics , had a first week sale of less than 4 k , and the sales are the same every week from than ) .

davygee : I agree , we will soon see many second-hand and new PSPs on low-price sales , especially if this site is telling the truth , than it means ( according to Wikipedia ) that there will be over 2 million old models left on stock . If those are reduced to 140-150 $ than I will see a huge blowout .
Also , I expect untill the end of October , if the S&L has some legs , for the PSP to reach anywhere from 24.5-25 million units sold ( again , IF we take the data on VGcharts ) , and Im expecting the EU sales to become much more stable than they where latelyt . If all goes well , seeing that last year during Christmas the PSP had sold ~ 2.5 million units , and even if the holiday sales will be of only 3 million , I expect the PSP to reach anywhere from 28-30 million . If it would have a huge killer game coming out like MHF2G or Dissidia , or even GT4 mobile , than the numbers could have reached 31 million . But at this poin Im expecting wordwide sales untill Jan. 1 to be minimum 28 million and maximum of 30 million :)

Hmm I can see it selling 25 million at the end of October but that is maybe to optimistic.

24.50 is serious possible.

Yeah , 24.5 is a pretty good bet , it all depends of how well will it hold in Japan and rise in the US IMO :)
