Great interview, maybe he has been reading the forums? 'We have near-term, mid-term and long-term opportunities. The near-term opportunity is the consumer who owns an PS3 or an Xbox 360 and has been bad-mouthing Wii to their friends'

That made me chuckle too. lol

@Squilliam: Don't you remember?  He reads the blogs, too!

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Fils-Aime: We have near-term, mid-term and long-term opportunities. The near-term opportunity is the consumer who owns an PS3 or an Xbox 360 and has been bad-mouthing Wii to their friends. We can reach that consumer with games like The Conduit or Tiger Woods with Wii Motion Plus. The mid-term opportunity is the more mainstream consumer who saw Wii at a friend's house but just needs a little extra incentive to get into our game. That's what Wii Motion Plus and Wii Fit Plus and new Super Mario Bros. Wii will hopefully achieve. And the long-term opportunity is that person who currently says, "I don't play video games and I have no interest in playing video games."

What about the Halo audience?
Fils-Aime: We think we win over the Halo audience with something like The Conduit, a multi-player, online, shooting experience, or Dead Space Extraction. And you know what? Once those people buy into Wii, they'll go buy Mario Kart or Wii Fit Plus. We're not going to be satisfied just picking up that existing gamer. We have to reach beyond and get that consumer who doesn't game. That's the only way we'll be able to continue growing as a company and as an industry.

This guy is more delusional than previous Sony execs if he belives Conduit is going to make Sony or X360 players drop 250$ on Wii and another 50$ on game just to play The Conduit.  Oh yeah and I bet that shooter on rails is going to make so huge impression on people who enjoy KZ2 or GeoW2

Well at least i can agree with him on Mario Kart thing but Wii Fit Plus is again laughtable.

the wii fit thing isnt laughable

i will absolutely destroy you in a shooter, and i went and bought wii fit ;)

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

So when hes feeling down, does Reggie take a bong hit of Malstrom?

Tease.

Reggie mentioned The Conduit as a reference point. The truth is Nintendo has no interest in fighting over a red ocean, this HD gamer is already being so overserved it would be very difficult and costly to go after it. Really it's not worth it.

But I think there are people in the middle that like to compliment their experiences, and would gladly buy Wii Fit and New Super Mario Bros. for what they are to enjoy with their family. There are people who value a different kind of experience on the side. That's the only HD gamer worth paying attention to.

Good interview. I especially liked his piece on short/mid/long term goals.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

He certainly has the right idea. Slowly, the Wii builds its hardcore library, and so you get more people caving and buying a Wii than caving and selling it. The strength of the library can only grow over time, and that's how you win over the core gamer.

They're not going to do it in a clean sweep, with one big title, but they'll pick 'em up at the fringes until the end of its lifecycle

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

"That's not an unlimited audience, right?
Fils-Aime: It's not. And actually the challenge increases the further you dip into this group. Two years ago, theoretically, there were ten consumers who said, "I would never play video games." We picked them off one at a time with Wii Fit or Brain Age 2. Now maybe there's five left, but now the bar is substantially higher for how to get them. Which is why we're looking to push the envelope with something like the Vitality Sensor, and why we have to make current gamers say, "Huh? What is that?" But that's exactly the type of reaction we got a couple of years ago when we first talked about "Wii Fit," and look where we are now."

While this does not explain HOW, it sure explains WHY the Wii Vitality Sensor is coming out. But, as I've been saying before, it's not about the hardware, but the software.
