What does it do? nobody will answer that question for me

It's a heart rate monitor. Ever been to the grocery store and put your arm in the machine that pinches your bicep and spits out two numbers that you'll have to start paying attention to when you hit 50? It's that on your finger.

Measuring the pulse?

This was a truly weird moment at Nintendo's E3 conferences. I don't remember them announcing a peripheral without games before, but that's really what they did here.

i know what blood pressure is

if it gets to high does it call the ambulance? does it tell when you get stressed and stop the game? what is the point of it?

This is why I think the peripheral is going to fail. If Nintendo doesn't bundle it with desirable software, it'll never take off. Here's hoping they just didn't have the software ready to demo yet. Can you imagine the balance board without Wii Fit?

Well that was my biggest gripe with Iwata's presentation of it. He never really explained why this was useful in conjunction with the Wii. It had no software to go with it. Outside of keeping you relaxed, it didn't really explain why it needs to be attached to your console at all. There was no real discussion of integration with the Wii. Out of everything at their conference, this was by far the most baffling piece, as we really don't have the slightest idea of what Nintendo's intentions are with this thing. Thus far, it's just a heart rate monitor lacking a pack-in title. *Snore*

It looks stupid and useless and not wanting to stick my fingers in something to take my pulse unless I am at the doctors office and even then I don't want to.

If and when this thing comes out I won't be buying.

dsister, I made an entire thread explaining how it works and what it could do for gameplay.. Nobody seemed interested at all.

It doesn't just take pulse.. It knows how oygenated your blood is and can actually tell you your bodies entire blood volume.. Check the link above

/Naïve mode on
Isn't the device's main purpose to avoid heart attacks using the Wii?
/Naïve mode off

I think in this case, they must have some very clear ideas of what software they're going to make with this. It's such a specific, special-purpose peripheral that there wouldn't be a reason to develop it otherwise.

Having said that, I wouldn't bet on it taking off either.
