Forums - PC - buying a pc very shortly: are these spec good to run crysis on highest?

well i definately can wait. this pc is only a necessity when starcraft 2 comes out :) so I can wait like 5-6 months easy. Yeah mayb that is the best option my dad seems to agree with me. That way I can get a sweet system with new OS and graphics card that supports dx11. what is dx11 anyways. does it do anything?

Have you seen the Xbox 360 Forza 2 -> 3 visual jump? Most of that was due to Tessellation which is a direct x 11 feature. Furthermore if you want to do media encoding the compute shaders mandated by the specification will work really well in a computational role, its much faster than even a Core i7 now and it'll be even faster with the new shader technologies.

It's not a DX11 feature. It's a feature on Radeon cards since R600 which is being incorporated into DirectX 11 only now. The functionality on the Xbox 360 isn't due to DX11 at all, just to AMD's tesselation.

Theres no point in replacing a GTS250 with an HD 4870, theres simply very little point to do that. They perform too similarly it would be wasted money.

The HD 4870 is the most forward compatible card in its class on the market today, but its still only a direct x 10.1+ card. Its not a fully direct x 11 compatible card. The new cards in this range will be coming in less than 6 months.

ATI overdrive or Rivatuner are two equivelents to Nvidia overdrive, they both work really well, ATI overdrive is easier and it has built in limits to prevent you from taking things a bit too far. Rivatuner is for advanced users.

If you can afford to wait, you could simply try to get a Windows 7 + Direct x 11 compatible computer at the same time. You'd get the most future proofed and up to date system and since both are coming in a matter of months, not years it may be worth waiting for.


All previous DX technology changes suggest that before we see dx11 games radeon 4870 will be good for editing text in MS word :) Even dx10 is barely used those days.

This. In the PC industry there's always newer, better, faster on the horizon and you might as well buy now and enjoy it. Going for longevity ("future proofing") is a pointless task. Get a 4870, you will notice the difference from a GTS250 in Crysis.

Its also a feature which hasn't been used up until now either. The DX 11 tessellation engine is far fuller featured than the one in the Xbox 360 and its finally being exposed in the API. ATI gets the advantage here because they have the only tessellation engines out there and its based on their technology.
