Forums - Gaming - Supposed 11 year old genius claims that video games are a waste of time

If video games are a waste of time, then what isn't?

If you spend your entire life doing nothin but work, then why bother living? If you're enjoying it, it's not a waste. Video games get so much hate nowadays considering that there's so many easier targets to pick on if you have the same mindset as that kid.

If you look at the big picture, you're wasting your time and life only when you spend most of it doing things you hate. Live life the way you want, but do the neccessary work to keep on doing what you love, rather working all the time and not using the hard-earned rewards on the things you like.

So are you a hedonist (not to it's most extreme and literal defnition, but for the most part)?

two ways this kid is wrong (and I feel sorry for him that he is skipping his childhood, I try to elongate mine :)

1. Video Games like any form of entertainment may on the surface seem to be wastes of time (as anything can be, especially if over done) but they also can help a person relax (and in turn sane) and can teach people things.

2. To say that Video Games and the Video Game industry does not benefit humanity is ignorant. The development, production, distribution, selling, etc. of Video Games is multi-billion dollar worldwide industry that brings jobs and helps bolster the economies of several countries worldwide. It also contributes to international trade and has been instrumental in breaking down cultural barriers now and in the past. Think about it would you rather a factory make Wii's or tanks?

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

I guess in a way, but I'm not selfish. I do what I can to help friends when they need somethin. Back at my old small school, our little group of friends often invited the loners to chill with us. Like I also mentioned, I still do what I have to do to avoid being on the streets.

That kid might not have the same childhood that alot of us here had but if he's happy doing what he does, then that's cool and he should keep at it. I just thought his comment was a little silly. I don't judge whether what others do is a waste of time or not.

I consider myself a hedonist, to the most part, but like you I won't compromise other people and do immoral things to get the utmost maximum pleasure. Trying to quantify pleasure is just ridiculous. If anything, like Calvin and Hobbes said, when you make an effort to have fun, it's not fun.

But on the other hand, let's say we can quantify fun. No matter what, when we die, X/0=0 or if we consider it X/Infinity, then it'll pretty much approach 0.

The industry demand for most humanities, social science and fine arts degrees is very minimal, and most Universities and colleges crank out more humanities, social science and fine arts graduates than other departments because the costs associated with teaching these students are small and their tuition is the same. In other words, these students are cash cows to universities ... The side effect of the behavior of universities is that these graduates are so common that only the best students from the best programs stand out enough to take any job within their field, and the bulk of these students are going to be over-educated employees at very unimpressive low-paying jobs.

Now, many of these graduates are not dumb and can successfully land some low level office job and crawl their way up to a lower management position. After that they tend to go back to school for a MBA in order to stand out and achieve the level of success that they believe their hard work has earned. Unfortunately for them, most universities have been steadily increasing the number of MBA students they accept and graduate due to increased applications but industry demand has certainly not been increasing at nearly the same rate. The side effect of this is that only the best students from the best programs with the best work experience stand out enough to get decent jobs.

In contrast, due to so few students entering the programs and such high industry demand, there are several 2 year trade school programs where students can make a living while studying and (when they graduate) can earn 100,000+ per year; and dramatically more if they start up their own successful business.

I know... I know.

This is actually the reason I'm considering doing something outside of my degree once I graduate. I study English literature because I love English literature and I would like to be able to do something in that field, but I would need to be very creative in order to leverage my degree in such a way that I would be able to do anything with it - everybody needs writers, but a lot of people already have them, etc.

It's why I've considered going to trade school if my degree doesn't end up getting me anything. There are actually a few that I'm already looking at.

Lol, I typed in "Gamer rage" in google.

I learned a good deal of Geography and World History by playing Civ II as a young lad

I learned about Existentialism playing Xenogears

and I learned how to catch em all by playing Pokemon Red.

Same here with the Total War series (although it was limited to the Mediteranian)

I learned how to type with Everquest (although I think it did a lot more bad to me than good, lol)
