Well, it's not only the 3D motion sensing that's interesting about Project Natal, it's the facial and voice recognition as well. And the interaction with Milo was very different than Nintendo's motion controllers. The thing is that this project was a big surprise, and surprises are always good at conferences like these :) Also the games Microsoft displayed appeals more to core.
Sony showed and announced several strong titles for the PSP and PS3: Gran Turismo (for both PSP and PS3), Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Little Big Planet PSP, Ratchet and Clank, Assassins Creed 2, etc. The Final Fantasy XIV was also a huge surprise. The motion control wasn't very impressive, I think it might be too little too late, and it looks very similiar to Wii. The Sony conference also was more serious in a way, not the annoying people and silly antics that seems to plague the Nintendo conferences.
Nintendo had a much better conference than last year. New Metroid was a big and positive surprise, and they also showed of some interesting games for the DS, and also some that looked like a load of crap. Very cool to see Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the multiplayer Mario as well. But they spent too much time with Wii Sports Resort, they spent a lot of time on it last year as well. And I think that's one of the problems with Nintendo's conference, we saw a lot of the wii motion plus stuff last year, and there wasn't really that much different showing this year. Red Steel 2 looked pretty cool, but I don't even remember if I saw that on the Nintendo conference, or somewhere else. Also the big focus on girls, tweens and casual gamers is a turn off for core gamers.
I agree that there's been a lot off hypocrisy concerning motion controllers lately though.
Im not a nintendo fan, but I thought there conference was better than these articles state. The only thing I could "ding" them for is they are just continuing to use the same 3 franchices over and over, but that's nothing new. They had more new games announced that I'll buy than either of the other two, and thats saying something since i almost never play my wii.
I had read one article about it that said sony and MS basically tied for first, but they'd give the nod to sony for showing more games coming out this year. However, I can't find the link for it now, so I fail.
Owner of PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Switch, PS Vita, and 3DS
Okay, I'll give MS due respect for Natal because that is innovative and exciting. Also a lot of good exclusives.
Nintendo dropped the 3 biggest games - Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros Wii and Wii Fit Plus will all easily outsell anything MS has. Metroid looked cool too. Plus WM+ is out NOW with GAMES. That has to count for something.
Sony? Uncharted is nice, I'd get if it I owned a PS3. MAG? Impressive but I'm not sold on it. Nothing else solid for release dates for the imfamous Delaystation 3 so probably all '10 or '11.
FFXIV was definately a shock announcement but I doubt SE will release 3 FF games in one year on a small install base like PS3 - it makes zero sense. They'd be competiting against themselves and FFVS especially might take the sales hit if people know FFXIV is around the corner. I expect it in '11 and without question I expect it on 360. Even SE said a 360 version is likely to happen. As for the motion controller.... With the innovation of Natal and with immediacy of WM+ - with games! the Sony motion controller just seems like far too little, far too late and the cost for an eyetoy on top of the controller for only a handful of yet to be announced games it just seems full of fail.
Also, unlike Natal and WM+ it seems totally contrary to what the system is all about. It won't work within the confinds of most of the games that PS3 tends to have. It seems forced.
So for me MS had the best showing for core gamers and a great hook for casual with Natal, Nintendo by a huge margin for casuals and Sony is still in deep, deep trouble but put on a good show to cover for it.

Yes, a Metroid that is made by Team Ninja...without Itagaki and 20 other top designers...cough cough...
Lets not get carried away here. To win that E3 after a boring conference like that, Nintendo would have had to say "We've boguht Rare back" or something.
| nordlead said: The disrespect for Nintendo is strong. Nintendo shows off Wii Remote - C Nintendo shows off Wii Balance Board - C Nintendo shows off WM+ with possibly best games announcement in a long time - C Microsoft shows their motion control Natal - A+++++++++++ Sony shows off their motion control with wand thingy - A+++++++++++ That is just crap and their scores are crap. At least try to be fair. Nintendo shows motion controls and everyone laughs and says it is stupid, but then turn around and praise the ground the competitors walk on even though they are late to the game. Even if you want to argue that there aren't many games for the balance board, we have the same exact argument for Microsoft and Sony. In my mind E3 went like this MS=Nintendo>Sony. Mostly for the following reasons. You can take your pick on who "won" but Ninty and MS both offered a lot of new stuff for gamers. Personally I choose Ninty since I own the console ![]() Microsoft shows off some stuff we didn't know about + new hardware that has lots of vision even if I thought it was too early to show off (lack of gamers games to show the public). Nintendo demoed their WM+ which is coming out now, plus they announced 2 Wii Marios at the same time. People have been asking for a 2D console mario since Mario 64 came out and they finally delivered. Very solid showing overall with new software. The vitality sensor was weird, but in no way destroys the show. Sony had only FFIV to announce and that is an MMO which generally is not liked by the FF crowd. Their motion control is also in a hugely primitive state and also has no gamers games to show off to the public. So much stuff was leaked that most of their show was a repeat of things we had already heard. Had they not leaked everything I would probably rank them a lot higher. |
I couldn't have put it better myself.
Nintendo has been getting nothing but shit from the core and the gaming media for 3 years for "waggle", "looking stupid while playing games", "casual waggling" and the like. Microsoft (and to a lower extent, Sony) comes up with full-body waggling where you most definitely can look stupid while playing, with no core motion-controlled games being shown, and suddenly everyone's happy and calling it the "future of gaming". Even though the demos didn't work particularly well, including some loltastic parts both in MS's and Sony's demos.
Let's face it, the gaming media simply doesn't like Nintendo and they're happy that Microsoft has a potential "wii-killer" (lol) in their hands. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957
Sony won with Queen opening the show.
Gamerace - SE said Fall '10. They said the FF11 team has been working on it for years now. This is the MMO that was revealed a long time ago. I think the code name was FF: Rapture or some crap. You are going to be surprised.
For me Sony won hands down.
Throw out motion control cause I dont want that shit.
PS3 -
Sony demoed Uncharted and released beta that day
Sony demoed MAG and gave fall release date.
Sony demoed Modnation Racers - That game was the game of the show for me
Sony demoed GoW
Sony demoed AC2.
Sony announced Agent.
Sony announced The Last Guardian.
Sony announced PSN Psone classics update. FF7 availble now! with 9 or 10 more PSone classics on the way!
Last year from critics "wah wah wah sony doesn't show in game stuff wah wah wah"
Oh, and I missed Nintendo's conference so I can't comment on theirs.
Only thing I know about it was the Vitality Sensor (huge minus)
But apparently lots of good games coming (Huge plus)
Seems like Natal is really catching fire. I'm really surprised.
Although basically, the grades all reflect how much interest these magazines have in each manufacturer. They all seem to be Microsoft > Sony >>> Nintendo, which is more or less how these groups work outside E3, and how they work in E3, too.
From what i saw, i would say Sony > Nintendo = Microsoft. But Natal didn't really light my fire. I've been wary of this camera technology since EyeToy, and i really don't see why Natal's going to make all the difference that the EyeToy and the Eye failed to do. Unless Microsoft moves to make a fundamental shift in their internal development philosophy, Natal is going to remain small potatoes to them, a side project, a diversion. It definitely shows promise, though. EyeToy Kinetic did it before, but this could really improve the exergaming genre, as well as the sports sim. It's there, but i don't see the zomg factor there. As for the rest of Microsoft's products, they were mostly things we already knew about. It was a good, diverse balance of titles, though, and Shadow Complex was definitely fresh.
Meanwhile, Nintendo shows technology that is here and now, with real software. They also did an excellent job in balancing their core/casual offerings. Their problems might be a lack of original technology, but their show was rife with surprises from every quarter. A strong showing of new stuff.
Sony really pulled out the stops, between new hardware, new software, and their efforts in getting personalities like Kojima-san involved, i think they were over the top.
But then again, the media also said that Microsoft won 2007, which clearly wasn't the case (they were definitely last place in 07, since they had very little original content there)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
